KINGSFORD — Back in its home pool, the Kingsford coed swim team handled business against Houghton on Thursday.

The boys managed to pick up an 88-62 win over the Gremlins.

The Kingsford girls squad grabbed a 93-77 victory.

“The boys’ team again had some really good close races,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “Houghton was down a couple of boys, so we were able to eek out a win.”

“Both of these teams, again, are really close but they have a few more veteran swimmers than we do,” Lindstrom said. “The girls teams were pretty evenly matched; they are both young squads with some veteran talent mixed in so it made for some great races.”

Joey Lundholm returned to the pool and kept his winning streak alive in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.9 seconds.

Lundholm also brought home first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.39).

The Kingsford boys also picked up wins in the 50-yard freestyle (Nolan White, 27.32), 100-yard freestyle (Sam Lamirand, 59.91), 100-yard backstroke (Lamirand, 1:09.45), 200-yard medley relay (Lamirand, Thomas Gibbons, Lundholm, Henry Strom; 2:00.74) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (Strom, Kai Ogo, White, Lundholm; 1:47.50).

“I was happy to see our guys really go after it in this meet with Joey Lundholm keeping his winning streak alive,” Lindstrom said. “And, Sam Lamirand reached his goal of going under a minute in the 100 free.”

On the girls side of things, the Flivvers grabbed wins in the 200-yard medley relay (Kailey Matuszewski, Ella McLean, Mary Lundholm, Ruth Molina Noguera; 2:16.44), 100-yard butterfly (Mary Lundholm, 1:17.58), 200-yard freestyle relay (Petra Grubb, Saho Kuramoto, Matuszewski, McLean; 2:03.41), 100-yard backstroke (Matuszewski, 1:16.17), 100-yard breaststroke (Iona Shilton, 1:01.08) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Molina Noguera, Mary Lundholm, Marley Dicson, Grubb; 4:40.25).

“We had some great races where some lowered their UP Qualifying times while adding a new qualifier in freshman Oliva Sage in the 100 backstroke,” Lindstrom said. “The main focus was to get more qualifiers and to lower seed times. That was basically the goal for both teams in this one.

It was mission accomplished for Lindstrom.

“For the most part we accomplished what we set out to do.”

Kingsford is in Gladstone today at 4 p.m. Then the Flivvers wrap up their season on Feb. 17 in Marquette for the U.P. Finals.
