Flivvers’ losing streak grows to six games

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford varsity softball team’s struggles continued on Wednesday as the Flivvers faced off with Negaunee at Lodal Park.

The Miners ended up sweeping Kingsford in the doubleheader, 22-3 and 14-5.

The Flivvers are now 2-11 overall.

Game One

Negaunee took advantage of a Flivvers’ error and notched its first run in the top of the first inning. When the top of the fifth inning came to an end, the Miners’ lead was up to 8-0.

Kingsford responded in the bottom of the frame.

Kailey Sundquist kicked things off with a double to center field. She then moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on a Negaunee error.

Finnley Lutz singled later in the inning, however, the Flivvers would only notch a run as the score moved to 8-1.

The Miners answered with four runs in the top of the sixth. But Kingsford’s offense wasn’t done yet.

Anna Bortolini led off the half inning with a single to second base.

The next two batters struck out bringing Sundquist back to the plate. She sent a shot to the center fielder that scored Bortolini for her second double of the day.

Sundquist then proceeded to steal third, setting the table for Addy Kriegl.

Kriegl reached on an error from the Negaunee right fielder and scored Sundquist, cutting the lead to 12-3.

The Miners tacked on 10 runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 22-3 road win.

Reagan Cram got the start for Kingsford. She pitched 4.2 innings, walking six and striking out three in the loss. Lutz came in for 1.2 innings of relief. She fanned two.

Sundquist led the Flivvers at the plate with a 2 for 3 showing at the plate and one RBI. McKenna Trulock also recorded an RBI. Bortolini and Lutz each recorded a hit.

As a unit, Kingsford committed seven errors while the Miners only had two.

Game Two

The Flivvers’ offense found its footing in the second game of the day. However, the result was the same as Negaunee locked up the sweep with a 14-5 victory.

The Miners jumped ahead early and by the middle of the second inning, they held a 4-0 advantage.

Maddie Jungles started the Kingsford comeback with a single in the bottom of the second. Lutz followed that with a shot to center field that moved Jungles to third. Eden Janousek grounded out to second, but Jungles was able to score on the play. Sammie Wilson followed all this action with a double to right field, bringing Lutz home and making it a 4-2 game.

However, by the middle of the fourth inning, the Negaunee lead was up to 9-2.

Janousek and Wilson opened the bottom of the fourth with singles, bringing Bortolini to the dish. She sent a ground ball through the infield to center and brought Janousek home. A Weber groundout scored Wilson, 9-4. Jenna Viau drove in Bortolini, for Kingsford’s final run in the inning, on a grounder as the lead was down to four.

The Flivvers wouldn’t score again.

Negaunee tacked on two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the 14-5 win.

Viau pitched a complete game for Kingsford. She struck out five batters.

Lutz and Wilson each collected two hits for the Flivvers. Bortolini, Wilson, Janousek, Viau and Weber each had an RBI. Weber and Sundquist drew the only walks for Kingsford.

The Flivvers fixed their errors in the second game. They committed one while Negaunee had two.

Kingsford battled Marquette in a doubleheader at Lodal Park on Thursday.

It will return to play on Monday at home against Coleman at 3:45 p.m.
