KINGSFORD — It wasn’t the most ideal conditions on Friday as the Kingsford varsity softball team welcomed Houghton to Lodal Park for a doubleheader.

Between intermittent snow flakes and chilling gusts of wind, the Flivvers struggled to contain the Gremlins’ offense and lost both games in the doubleheader.

In the first game, Houghton picked up a 14-4 win and closed the day with a 15-2 victory.

Game One

The Gremlins jumped ahead early as they scored eight runs in the top of the first.

They added two more runs to their total in the top of the second and took a 10-0 lead over the Flivvers.

Kingsford found its rhythm on offense in the next half inning. Jenna Viau started things off by drawing a one-out walk and bringing Eden Janousek to the plate.

Janousek smashed a pitch to center field for a double, moving the runner to third.

Maddie Jungles drove the run in on a ground ball and Janousek added another run on a wild pitch as Kingsford cut the lead to 10-2.

A sacrifice bunt from Kailey Sundquist drove a run in for the Flivvers in the bottom of the third.

Two batters later, McKenna Trulock singled home Kingsford’s final run in the game.

Houghton would add four more runs to its total in the top of the fifth as it locked up the 14-4 win.

Ady Weber started the game on the mound for Kingford. Viau also pitched for the Flivvers, recording two strikeouts.

Anna Bortolini led the Flivvers at the plate, finishing 2 for 3. Sundquist, Trulock and Jungles all recorded an RBI. Sundquist and Viau both drew a walk in the game.

Game Two

The cold conditions didn’t slow the Gremlins down in the second game of the day either.

They opened the first inning with a three run output and then added four in the top of the third. They weren’t done yet though and the lead was up to 8-0 after the fourth inning.

Houghton notched seven more runs before Kingsford could respond.

In the bottom of the fifth, needing something to break their way, the Flivvers began to rally. Bortolini started things off with a walk, bringing Addy Kriegl to the plate. She singled and a wild throw brought Bortolini in to score. Sundquist followed that up with a deep shot to right field that saw her end up on third base and drove in Kriegl. However, three straight pop outs ended the game with the Gremlins ahead 15-2.

Viau got the start on the bump for Kingsford. She pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three.

Offensively, Bortolini stole two bases while Viau ended up 2 for 3 at the dish on the day. Sundquist and Kriegl each had an RBI.

The Flivvers are back at Lodal Park on Tuesday for a one-game series with Negaunee at 3:45 p.m.

BEARS 11, KNIGHTS 0

BONDUEL, Wis. — The Norway varsity softball team struggled to get its offense going on Saturday as it headed to Bonduel, Wis. for a doubleheader against the Bears.

As a result, the Knights (5-5) lost 11-0 in the first game and 6-0 in the final game of the day.

Game One

Neither team could get its offense going in the first two innings and it was Bonduel that would figure things out first in the bottom of the third.

The Bears would bat through their entire lineup as they brought five runs home. They would add another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Norway’s offense couldn’t claw back into the game after that and Bonduel secured the 11-0 victory.

Kara Stanchina picked up the loss for the Knights. She pitched six innings and walked eight batters.

Emma Dube was the only Knight with more than one hit as she finished 2 for 3 at the dish. Stanchina, Tessa Castelaz and Anna Debidart each recorded one hit.

Then both team’s offenses fell silent for the next three innings.

Bonduel figured its issues out first and added two more to its total in the bottom of the sixth.

That’s where the score would stay as the Knights went down in order in the top of the seventh.

Joryn Moln got the start for Norway.

She pitched six innings and struck out three.

Elizabeth Romitti led the Knights at the plate, going 2 for 3. Castelaz had the Knights’ other hit. Moln drew a walk in the contest.
