KINGSFORD — The Kingsford varsity softball bats were on another level Tuesday as the Flivvers welcomed Westwood to Lodal Park for a doubleheader.

The Flivvers were dominant in both games and they picked up an 18-8 win and a 14-4 victory over the Patriots.

Game One

Addy Weber picked up the win on the mound for Kingsford in the first game. She pitched a complete game while striking out five and allowing seven walks.

Westwood kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning as it tallied three runs.

However, the Flivvers recorded 16 total runs in the second and third innings to put the game out of reach.

The Patriots would score five runs in the top of the fourth, but it was too little too late as Kingsford rolled to the win.

Weber also led the Flivvers at the plate with five RBIs. She was 3 for 4 with a double. Anna Bortolini notched four RBIs on a 5 for 5 day with two doubles and a triple in the batter’s box. She also recorded a steal. Kailey Sundquist was a force on the base path with three stolen bases.

Carly Smith had two walks.

Game Two

Jenna Viau got the ball in the second game for Kingsford. She picked up the win while pitching five innings and striking out three.

Once again, the Patriots started the scoring in the second game. This time they put up four runs and when the teams changed sides, Westwood held the Flivvers to one run.

Kingsford added two runs to its total in the bottom of the third and they trailed 4-3.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Flivvers rallied to put up 10 runs and take the lead. They would hold on to win 14-4.

Sundquist led the way at the plate in the win. She was 3 for 3 with four RBIs, two home runs and a walk. She also recorded two stolen bases.

Reagan Cram and Maddie Jungles each tallied two RBIs for Kingsford while Bortolini, Addy Kriegl, Finnley Lutz and Viau each recorded one RBI.

The Flivvers welcome Houghton to town on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

KNIGHTS 21, ROCKETS 0

RAPID RIVER — After getting a few games under its belt last week, the Norway varsity softball team kicked off Skyline Central Conference action with a doubleheader on Tuesday on the road against Rapid River.

The Knights were dominant at the plate as they picked up a 21-0 win in the opener and followed that up with a 20-7 victory.

Norway is now 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in SCC action.

Game One

The Knights started the day with sophomore pitcher Kara Stanchina on the mound. She pitched three innings to pick up the win while striking out five and allowing one hit.

Norway recorded one run in the top of the first. That was all the runs the Knights would need to win, however, they weren’t done yet.

They tallied 12 runs in the second and eight in the third to take the win.

Elizabeth Romitti led the way on offense. She was 3 for 3 at the dish with four RBIs and a stolen base. Jordyn Moln ended the day with two doubles and a triple while racking up six RBIs. Peyton Paquette led the Knights with two walks.

Game Two

After Norway tallied 13 runs in the top of the first, the Rapid River offense came to life.

The Rockets scored five runs between the first and second innings. However, the Knights still held a 17-5 advantage.

Rapid River would score two more runs in the fourth, but it couldn’t catch up to Norway’s offensive output.

Romitti picked up the win for the Knights. She pitched 1.1 innings and struck out three. Moln also pitched in the second game. She went 3.2 innings and fanned two batters.

Tori Cooper led the way offensively for Norway. She recorded a home run and five RBIs. Moln also contributed four RBIs. Stanchina, Alex Southwick, Jessa Rossler and Tessa Castelaz each recorded two RBIs. Rossler and Romitti also each drew two walks.

BRONCOS 17, NORDICS 1

HARRIS — The North Dickinson offense struggled against Bark River-Harris as it kicked off Skyline Central Conference play with a doubleheader in Harris on Tuesday.

The Nordics dropped the opening game 17-1. They followed that with a 12-7 loss to the Broncos.

North Dickinson is now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in SCC action.

Game One

Janessa Chartier got the start for the Nordics in the first game. She pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts. She also walked five batters.

North Dickinson’s only run came in the top of the second inning off of an RBI from Chartier.

Kiira Ledzian, Aspen Anderson, Khloe Roberts and Chartier each recorded one of the Nordics’ four hits in the game.

The Broncos recorded five hits and drew five walks.

Game Two

North Dickinson figured something out offensively in the second game and started with a three-run first inning. The Nordics added another run to their tally in the second and took a 4-2 lead into the third inning.

But, after recording one run in each of the first three innings the Broncos’ offense went to work in the bottom of the fourth.

They tallied eight runs and took a commanding 11-4 lead.

North Dickinson tried to mount a comeback, scoring two runs in the fifth, however, the Bark River-Harris lead was too out of reach.

Chartier also pitched 3.1 innings in the second game. She recorded one strikeout against five walks. Ava Oman also took the mound for the Nordics. She pitched 2.2 innings and fanned two batters.

Offensively, Ella Rossi led the way with a 4 for 4 performance. She also had one RBI. Lacy Jungwirth was the RBI leader for North Dickinson with two. Jungwirth tallied the Nordics only double. Anderson, Roberts and Raina Ledzian each tallied one stolen base.

North Dickinson is back in action on Friday as it welcomes Munising to Hardwood Hall at 3 p.m.

BADGERS 12, MOUNTAINEERS 2

NIAGARA, Wis. — After committing seven errors in a loss to Wausaukee earlier in the week, the Niagara varsity softball team fixed its mistakes on Tuesday and secured a 12-2 six-inning win over Iron Mountain in Niagara, Wis.

“It was really nice putting the Wausaukee game in the rear view mirror from the miscues we had in Wausaukee on Monday night,” Badgers head coach Joe Champeau said. “I have a resilient group of girls. To go from seven errors on Monday to one on Tuesday, shows the potential and mental toughness my group of girls have. It was great getting back on track playing Badger softball.”

Elesia Sweig picked up the win on the mound for Niagara. She pitched a complete game with four strikeouts while only allowing two earned runs.

“Sweig has been very consistent thus far on the mound for us this year,” coach Champeau said. “Her strike to ball ratio allows us to consistently compete in games. She definitely put the work into the offseason and it has shown from her freshman to sophomore year.”

Ashlyn Bal got the start for the Mountaineers. She struck out seven batters and allowed two walks.

Pitching and defense weren’t the only areas the Badgers found success in on Tuesday. They also were on fire at the plate recording 14 hits.

Niagara’s Aiva Champeau nearly hit for the cycle, finishing 4 for 5 at the dish with two singles, a double and a triple. She also recorded four RBIs. Mallory Sanicki also recorded three RBIs on a 3 for 4 day.

Sweig finished 3 for 5 with a double. Rachael Walker also recorded a double and an RBI for the Badgers.

Juliana Tapio led the way for Iron Mountain with a home run and two RBIs. Bal and Macy Linsenbigler each recorded one hit.

Niagara is back in action today as it heads to Crivitz at 4:30 p.m. while the Mountaineers are off until Monday when they welcome Ishpeming to town at 3 p.m.
