Knights drop nailbiter against Bears

BONDUEL, Wis. — After maintaining a slim advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Norway varsity baseball team looked to be on the cusp of another road win on Saturday in Bonduel, Wis.

However, the Bears had a different plan and they rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Knights.

“Good start to the game creating a 2-0 lead,” Norway head coach Tony Adams said. “Cole Baij provided the start we wanted on the mound and Bryce Adams had the big hit to make it a two-run lead.

“Offensively, we failed to execute from that point on. Our pitching was good enough to win. Our defense faltered late. Bonduel is a quality program and these types of games will benefit us in the long term but (we are) disappointed that we didn’t finish.”

Senior Alex Ortman started the Knights off on the right foot in the top of the second with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch that Cameron Varda followed with a single of his own, bringing Bryce Adams to the plate.

Adams took the first pitch and Varda easily stole second. Then Ortman scored on an error, moving Varda to third.

Adams drove him in and Norway held a 2-0 lead.

The Knights frustrated the Bonduel offense for much of the game, but in the bottom of the fifth it broke through for a run. The Norway advantage was down to 2-1.

The Bears took their first lead in the seventh as they brought five batters to the plate and scored two runs.

Cole Baij got the start on the mound for Norway. He pitched two innings allowing one hit and striking out two. Varda and Ortman came in in relief for the Knights. Varda pitched 2.1 innings and walked three while Ortman pitched 2.1 innings and fanned three.

Varda led the way at the plate with a 2 for 3 performance. Ortman, Adams and Maddux Burklund each recorded one hit.

Adams recorded Norway’s only RBI.

Owen Baij and Ortman each drew a walk.

The Knights return home today for a matchup with Niagara at 3:30 p.m.
