ANTIGO, Wis. — Antigo put together final-inning comebacks in both ends of a doubleheader and edged Kingsford 13-12 and 7-6 in a non-conference varsity baseball Saturday at Kretz Field.

The Flivvers (2-4) held early leads in both games, jumping out 5-0 in the first contest and 2-0 in the second game, but consistent control on the mound was an issue during a bone-chilling afternoon with temperatures barely above freezing.

Kingsford issued 16 walks and plunked five batters in the two games combined. Antigo’s hurlers walked 10 batters and hit six more.

“We came down here because we wanted to play some baseball and obviously one of the things we have to develop is our pitching,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “And you saw today, we had some great moments, but we’re not there yet so that’s why early games are important to us, to get the guys we need to get out there and pitch because down the road we need to be able to throw strikes and just do a little bit better. “But I thought overall, we hit the ball again which is good, and we’re playing. We need to play.”

The Flivvers offense tagged nine hits in the first game and five more in the second.

Junior Andres Finley, the game one starter, led Kingsford’s offense with three doubles and five runs scored in the afternoon. Senior Wyatt Scott drilled a triple to the fence in right center and hit a single in the second game. Junior Gavin Trevillian had a pair of singles, including a two-run hit during Kingsford’s five-run first in game one.

Junior Joey Weber, who also pitched in the first game, had two hits with a RBI. Freshman Noah Trulock drove in a run. Junior Nolan Hendrickson and sophomore Jacob Deuter each had a hit and scored a run. Junior Jack Kriegl added a single and scored four times. Junior Garret Brown, who started on the hill in the second game, singled and scored twice, and he made a nice grab off a hot-shot liner diving to his left at third base to end an Antigo threat in the third inning of the first game. Freshman Jonah Donier, who also pitched in game two, notched a hit.

Despite the 5-0 head start, the first game ended up tied 7-7 after 4 innings, and Antigo grabbed a 9-7 edge in the fifth. Kingsford took one back in the sixth and then produced a four-runs in the top half of the seventh to reclaim the lead at 12-9.

The Flivvers were one out away from victory in the final half of the seventh with their three-run cushion, but couldn’t close it out. The tying run came on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch sent the winning tally across. Antigo’s four-run game-winning rally included only two hits, both singles.

Kingsford was ahead 6-5 in the final frame of the second game and Antigo again stung the Maize and Blue. A two-out single drove in the winning run in that one, but Kingsford helped Antigo with a walk and hit by pitch along the way.

“That’s how baseball is,” Kriegl said. “We had our chances in both games and fell a little short but I’m happy with where we’re at. Obviously I’m competitive so I like to win but ultimately there is more to it than just winning. We have to develop things, and if we do, I think we’ll be more successful down the road.”

The Flivver pitching staff combined to strike out 13 Antigo batters.
