Bobcats ambush Elcho in 12-2 Northern Lakes win

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence varsity baseball team accrued 11 hits, stole 11 bases and jumped on Elcho right away in the first inning to pick up a 12-2 Northern Lakes Conference win on Wednesday in Florence, Wis.

The Bobcats are now 8-3 on the season and 4-3 in conference games while the Purple Hornets fall to 0-8 and 0-5 in the NLC.

Elcho opened the scoring in the top of the first. However, it only scored one run.

Florence immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning. Trent McLain started things off with a two-out walk. Logan Thompson drove him in with a double to right field and the game was tied at one. A Mason Koski single and a Bryce Leffler double scored four more runs and the Bobcats took a 5-1 lead into the second.

They would add another run in the frame after a Bradley Steber single scored William Kelley.

The Purple Hornets took advantage of a Florence error in the third and cut the lead to 6-2.

McLain drove in another run on a two-out walk in the bottom of the third for Florence. It led 7-2.

The Bobcats scored three runs in the fourth on a Leffler walk, a Joey Holmstrom popout and a Kelley single. They would score one in the fifth and one in the sixth to lock up the six-inning 12-2 win.

Kelley started the game for Florence. He struck out four in 2.2 innings and didn’t allow a hit. Steber picked up the win. He struck out three in 3.1 innings on the mound.

Leffler and Mason Koski led the Bobcats with two RBIs apiece. Kelley, Steber, McLain and Thompson each tallied one RBI. Leffler, Kelley and Mason Koski all recorded two hits.

Thompson, Smith, Kelley and Leffler each stole two bases to lead Florence.

The Bobcats drew eight walks as a team while only allowing two to Elcho. However, they committed six errors compared to one for the Purple Hornets.

Florence was in Three Lakes, Wis., on Thursday. It returns to the diamond on Monday at home against Goodman/Pembine. The game is slated to start at 5 p.m.
