KINGSFORD — Junior Gavin Grondin allowed just one hit while striking out three and scattering five walks as Kingsford blanked Iron Mountain 10-0 in six innings Monday afternoon at Spigarelli Field in a non-conference varsity baseball matchup.

Juniors Garrett Brown and Andres Finley powered the Flivvers at the plate. Brown punched three singles and scored four times, while Finley drove in five runs on the strength of a double and a triple, the three-bagger bringing on the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth.

“The difference in this game from last year is we were patient at the plate, hitting the pitches that we should,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “And there are a lot of kids seeing the ball well right now. We put a lot of pressure on them. We were aggressive on the bases and played good defense. It feels good.”

Kingsford led 1-0 after one thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat off sophomore Jacob Deuter, who also added a lead-off single and a run scored in the third.

The Flivvers opened the game up in the second with four runs, Finley’s two-out, two-run double producing the most damage in the frame. Two more runs scored in the third and one in the fourth before Finley roped one down the right field line for the walk-off triple in the sixth.

Kingsford totaled eight hits and took advantage of five walks and three hit batsmen. Junior Joey Weber and senior Wyatt Scott also had knocks for the Flivvers.

Grondin didn’t allow a hit until a single in the fifth, and the Mountaineers only had one runner make it as far as third in the game.

“Gavin pitched an unbelievable game,” Kriegl said. “He’s getting ahead in the count which is nice to see. He walked a few and I know he was frustrated, but we haven’t pitched him a lot. He’ll just keep getting better with time.”

The Mountaineers used several pitchers in the game, recording just two strikeouts.

“Hats off to Iron Mountain,” Kriegl said. “They’re young and they’re going to get a lot better.”

Kingsford improved to 9-6 and resumes conference play Tuesday at Gladstone.

“It’s a fun team right now,” Kriegl said. “Things are going our way. Hopefully we can keep it rolling and we’ll see what happens.”
