Florence baseball falls to Rebels

LAONA, Wis. — After holding a slim lead, The Florence varsity baseball team couldn’t hang on against Northern Lakes Conference opponent Laona/Wabeno on Tuesday and lost to the Rebels 7-6 in Laona, Wis.

The Bobcats are now 6-2 on the year after starting with six-straight wins and 2-2 in conference action.

William Kelley started the game on the hill for Florence. He pitched three innings and struck out two. Trent McLain and Mason Koski also pitched for the Bobcats. McLain struck out four in two innings of work while Koski struck out one in an inning.

Florence started the scoring in the first inning when a Logan Thompson walk plated Bradley Steber. The lead was 1-0.

The Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the opening frame and pulled ahead 2-1.

The Bobcats’ bats came to life in the third as they plated four runs. Mason Koski drove in two with a single while Logan Koski plated two more with a double.

Laona/Wabeno scored two runs in the fifth inning and cut the Florence lead to 5-3.

McLain drove in a run for Florence in the top of the sixth and the lead was back to three runs. However, the Rebels weren’t done. They scored three quick runs in the sixth and then a Bobcats’ error plated another. Laona/Wabeno led 7-6.

The Rebels would hold on to pick up the conference win.

Mason Koski and Logan Koski each recorded two RBIs. McLain and Thompson both had one RBI. Thompson also drew two walks. Matthew Smith and McLain each stole one base. Steber was 2 for 4 with a walk.

The Bobcats are home today against Crandon at 5 p.m.

FLIVVERS 4, BRAVES 2

KINGSFORD — After a strong first inning, the Kingsford varsity baseball team rode that momentum to a 4-2 win over Gladstone at Lodal Park on Tuesday.

The Flivvers are 6-6 on the year.

Garrett Brown kicked off the scoring for Kingsford in the bottom of the first inning when he scored on a Braves’ error. Nolan Hendrickson followed that up with a single to center field that scored Andres Finley and the Flivvers led 2-0.

They would hold that lead until the third when Gladstone tacked on two runs to tie the game at two.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, Kingsford pulled ahead 3-2 off of a Gladstone error. In the next at-bat, the Flivvers added another run off a Gavin Trevillian single and they held a 4-2 advantage.

That’s where the score would remain when the six-inning game ended.

Trevillian picked up the win on the mound. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out seven while allowing one walk.

Brown was 2 for 2 at the dish with a stolen base. Gavin Grondin was 1 for 1 with a double and a walk. Finley, Trebillian and Hendrickson each tallied an RBI.

Kingsford welcomes Iron Mountain to Lodal Park today at 4 p.m.
