Floriano, Johnson lead KHS at GNCs

MENOMINEE — Michael Floriano won two individual events and contributed to a victorious relay and Noah Johnson registered wins in the discus and shot put to lead the Kingsford boys track team to a runner-up finish behind Marquette at the Great Northern Conference Championships on Thursday in Menominee.

Floriano posted victories in the 100 (11.55 seconds) and the 200 (23.99) and teamed with Gaige Sorenson, Jack Olson and Connor Quick to top the field in the 800 relay (1:33.58).

As he has done all season, Johnson dominated the throwing events, claiming the top spot in the discus with a 163 feet, 4 inches (nearly 30 feet farther than the competition) and registering a victory in the shot put with a personal best 52-05.

Johnson’s teammates Grayson Palmer and Garrett Veale have been outstanding in the discus and shot put during the season and at the GNC event as well.

Palmer placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put while Veale finished runner-up in the shot put and third in the discus.

Other second-place finishers for the Flivvers included Jack Olson in the 200, Sid Olson in the 100 hurdles and the 400 relay team of the two Olsons, Sorenson and Floriano.

Marquette finished with the team title by recording 156 points. The Flivvers (93), Gladstone (60), Menominee (39) and Escanaba (4) rounded out the field.

In the girls event, Gladstone claimed the trophy by scoring 104 points. Marquette finished second with 97.5, Escanaba took third with 67, Menominee placed fourth with 56 and the Flivvers finished fifth with 28.5.

The Flivver girls were led by their 800-relay team of Mylee Kreider, Addie Rutter, Sophia Fornetti and Maddie Kreider which finished first with a season-best time of 1:52.82. The same quartet also finished second in the 400 relay.

Mylee Kreider added a third-place finish in the long jump.
