KINGSFORD — Juniors Andres Finely and Joey Weber combined for a one-hitter as Kingsford throttled Menominee 10-0 in five innings and improved to 4-0 in conference play Friday afternoon at Lodal Park.

In game two of the twin bill, a non-conference contest, the Flivvers jumped out 9-0 before settling for a 9-4 decision.

“Finally excellent weather for baseball, and I thought we played really good,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “Our pitching was really solid. We’re hitting the ball. Things are good right now. But you know baseball. That can change.”

Finley started for the Flivvers in the opener, allowing one hit, one walk while whiffing three over three innings. The lefty Weber also punched out three in shutting down the Maroons over the final two innings.

Menominee’s biggest threat to score came in the third when they loaded the bases with two away, but Finley got a pop fly to left caught by senior Wyatt Scott to protect the shutout.

Finley and Weber also led Kingsford at the plate. Finley tagged a double and two singles, while Weber poked a single and double with two RBIs. Sophomore Jacob Deuter added a RBI hit, and junior Garrett Brown brought on the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out single to left to drive in freshman Jonah Doenier, who also had one of Kingsford’s 10 hits in the win.

After a scoreless first inning, the Flivvers put up four in the second and opened things up with a five-run fourth.

Kingsford had six hits in the second contest. Deuter led the charge there with a run-scoring single in the third before smoking a line-drive two-run double over the left fielder’s head in the fourth that helped fuel a six-run inning and put the game out of reach.

Freshman Bradlee Bottesi chipped in a single and a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Doenier also had a sac fly RBI along with a run-scoring double. Freshman Devin Miller added a RBI double, and freshman Jimmy Myers singled in a run.

Menominee plated all four of its runs in the fifth on just one hit.

Brown started for Kingsford and allowed one hit while striking out two over two innings.

Junior Jack Kriegl delivered gas over the next two innings, fanning five.

Bottesi threw in the fifth.

He fanned the first two he saw, but a dropped third strike to the second batter cracked the door open for the Maroons and Bottesi struggled with his command after that.

All four Menominee runs scored with two outs.

Doenier closed out the game for Kingsford and worked around a two on with one out situation by getting a grounder to first for the second out and a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Kingsford, happy to see sunny skies and temps in the 70s after having most of their week wiped out by rain, improved to 8-6 overall.

Next up is a single game against Iron Mountain Monday at Lodal Park.

The Flivvers and Mountaineers were rained out earlier in the week.
