Knights softball stays perfect in Skyline Central

NORWAY — Bringing a perfect Skyline Central Conference record into the seventh round of SCC play, the Norway varsity softball team had its hands full on Tuesday as it looked to remain on top of the conference against Superior Central at Marion Park.

The Knights were up for the challenge as they picked up a 6-3 win and ended the day with a 9-4 victory.

Norway is now 12-0 in the SCC and 19-9 overall.

Game One

The Cougars struck first as they scored one run in the top of the opening frame. However, the Knights were able to respond immediately.

Olivia Kraemer tied things at one with a single that brought Kara Stanchina home. Kraemer would score two batters later on a wild pitch. Elizabeth Romitti, in her first game back from injury, gave Norway a 3-1 lead on a sacrifice bunt.

The Knights kept their foot on the gas and a Victoria Cooper double in the third gave them a 4-1 advantage.

The Cougars made things interesting in the fourth as they cut the lead to 4-3.

But, Norway wasn’t deterred and it scored two runs in the fourth to pull ahead by three runs.

Superior Central tried to rally, but Stanchina struck out the Cougars’ final batter and the Knights picked up the win.

Stanchina got the win in the circle for Norway.

She struck out five in seven innings.

Kraemer, Cooper and Romitti each tallied an RBI.

Romitti also drew the Knights’ lone walk. Anna Debidart, Jordyn Moln and Stanchina each stole a base.

Game Two

Romitti kicked off the scoring in the second game on a passed ball and Norway took a 1-0 lead after two innings. But, they weren’t done there.

In the third, the Knights scored four runs and took a 5-0 lead. Payton Paquette, Moln and Kraemer recorded RBIs in the inning.

Superior Central scored a run in the fourth, but it was already over.

Norway added three runs in the fifth and locked up the 9-4 win in seven innings.

Moln picked up the win for Norway. She stuck out four in seven innings.

Stanchina led the way with two RBIs. Kraemer, Moln, Paquette and Tessa Castelaz each recorded an RBI. Cooper led the Knights with two walks.

Norway is back in action today at Marion Park for a SCC doubleheader against Stephenson.

MINERS 5, FLIVVERS 2

NEGAUNEE — After starting the week on a roll, the Kingsford varsity softball team headed to Negaunee on Tuesday looking to grab its third win of the week.

However, the Miners’ offense was too much for the Flivvers as Negaunee picked up a 5-2 victory.

Kingsford is now 10-21 on the season.

Negaunee didn’t waste any time getting its offense working in the first. It took advantage of two free passes and two Flivvers’ errors to score two runs.

In the top of the fourth, Kingsford began to mount its comeback.

An Addy Kriegl single scored put the Flivvers on the board. However, their run would stall and the Miners held on to their 2-1 lead.

Negaunee scored three more runs in the fifth to increase its lead to four runs.

Kingsford took advantage of a Miners’ error in the seventh to score another run, but it fell to the home team 5-2.

Mya Brunswick was tagged with the loss for the Flivvers. She struck out four in six innings.

Brunswick and Kriegl each had one RBI. Maddison Jungles recorded Kingsford’s lone walk. Kriegl and Ady Weber each had two hits in the contest.

PATRIOTS 15, MOUNTAINEERS 5

ISHPEMING — The Iron Mountain varsity softball team struggled to slow the Westwood offense on Monday and the Mountaineers lost both games of a doubleheader in Ishpeming.

The Patriots started the day with a 15-5 victory over IM and closed things out with a 17-1 win.

Game One

The Mountaineers started on the right foot in the first inning as McKinlee brought home Juliana Tapio with a single and they led 1-0.

Westwood tied things at one in the bottom of the second. However, Iron Mountain responded immediately when a Macy Linsenbigler single gave it a 2-1 lead in the third.

That’s when the wheels fell off.

Westwood scored four runs in the third and then nine in the fourth as they locked up the win.

Ava Sardina picked up the loss for Iron Mountain. She struck out one in 4.1 innings.

Sardina led the Mountaineers with two RBIs. Linsenbigler and Peterson each had one. Sardina also recorded a stolen base.

Game Two

Lindsey Sorenson gave Iron Mountain a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a single.

But, that wouldn’t last long as Westwood scored 17 runs in the bottom of the frame.

Neither team would score again.

Linsenbigler was tagged with the loss. She struck out one in two innings.

Sorenson and Tapio recorded the Mountaineers only hits. They each had one. Tapio also drew a walk.
