IRON MOUNTAIN — It was an overcast day at Mountaineer Stadium as the Iron Mountain girls varsity soccer team welcomed Marquette to town on Monday.

The Mountaineers fought for the entirety of the game, however, they ended up losing to the Sentinels, 8-0.

“Despite the score, they did play hard,” IM coach Carly Lambert said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do in terms of being first to the ball. That’s pretty much what’s been killing us the whole time.”

Seven minutes into the game, Marquette senior Ellarie Thierry broke a scoreless tie as she buried a close shot and gave the Sentinels a 1-0 advantage.

A few minutes later, Marquette added another goal to its total after Jessica Gooch corralled a rebound and knocked it past IM goalkeeper Emily Copley as the lead grew to 2-0.

With just under 22 minutes left in the first half, the Sentinels pushed their lead to 3-0 on a chip shot goal from Erin Phillips.

A minute and a half later, Morgan Amann drilled a shot across the goal that beat Copley to the left post and Marquette held a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Seven minutes into the second half, Thierry added her third goal of the game on a left foot shot and the Sentinels held a 6-0 advantage.

Anabel Ollila and Amann each scored a goal in the second half as Marquette won by mercy rule, 8-0.

Despite the lopsided loss, it could have ended in the first half if not for Copley’s efforts in the net.

“Emily Copley, despite the score, (it was) a game of a lifetime,” Lambert said. “She’s a senior and it sucks. She’s going to be missed. I’m glad she was able to keep a good attitude, because I think she knew she was having a game of a lifetime.

Earlier in the season, Iron Mountain entered multiple games shorthanded.

“It means a lot to have Copley back in the net,” IM coach Bethany Merrill said. “She takes charge. She can lead a lot better back there, just in experience.”

While there were good things for the Mountaineers, it wasn’t all good as sophomore Olivia Fleming was hurt in the second half and had to be helped off the pitch.

“It hurts, hopefully she’s OK,” Merrill said. “She’s a very hard worker. She’s new to us and new to the team, so it’s been a treat having her so far. Hopefully, we can have her back soon.”

The Mountaineers are headed to Houghton today for a 5 p.m. match and then they are back in action on Thursday against Kingsford at Mountaineer Stadium as they look for their first win.
