Niagara handles business against Rangers

NIAGARA, Wis. — It took a few innings for the Niagara varsity baseball team to get its offense going on Friday at Memorial Ball Field in Niagara, Wis.

However, once they got started, the Badgers were too much for Marinette & Oconto Conference foe Wausaukee to handle and they rolled to an 8-2 win.

Niagara is now 7-5 overall and 6-3 in conference action.

Neither team could get anything going at the plate in the first two innings. Then, after retiring the Rangers in order, Niagara made its move in the bottom of the third.

Aiden Sweig started it off with a walk. The Badgers picked up two quick outs and Cody Bath stepped into the batter’s box. He sent a shot to center field and reached second safely allowing T.J. Beard to cross the plate. Christian Hedmark tacked on an RBI double of his own in the next at-bat and Niagara held a 2-0 advantage.

Mason Richtig retired the Wausaukee side in order and the Badgers went back to work.

Richtig started it off by reaching first on an error.

He would advance to second on the error.

Gavin Neuens moved the runner to third with a single and then Sweig drove a pitch to right field for a two-RBI double. Niagara now held a 4-0 lead.

The Rangers found their footing in the top of the fifth, sending seven batters to the plate and scoring two runs, cutting the Badgers’ lead to 4-2.

That’s where the score would stay until the bottom of the sixth when Hedmark sent another ball to the outfield for a double, plating three runs.

Hedmark would score on a Wausaukee error and Niagara took an 8-2 lead.

The Rangers couldn’t get anything going in the top of the seventh and the Badgers picked up the M&O win.

Richtig started the game on the mound for Niagara and secured the win. He pitched 6.2 innings and struck out seven while allowing one walk.

Offensively, Hedmark led the way for the Badgers. He was 3 for 4 at the dish with four RBIs and two doubles. Sweig finished the day 1 for 1 at the plate with two RBIs and two walks. Blake Holmes and Easton Holmes also recorded a walk apiece. Blake Holmes and Neuens each tallied a stolen base.

Niagara is back in action today at 4:30 p.m. in Crivitz, Wis.

BOBCATS 12, PATRIOTS 0

GOODMAN, Wis. — It only took five innings for the Florence varsity baseball team to pick up another Northern Lakes Conference win on Friday as it took down Goodman-Pembine, 12-0, in Goodman, Wis.

The Bobcats are now 7-2 on the year and 3-2 in conference play. The Patriots fall to 0-9 on the season and 0-4 in conference games.

Trent McLain kicked off the scoring for Florence in the top of the first with a triple that scored William Kelley and Bradley Steber. Logan Thompson followed that with a grounder to short that scored McLain. When the dust settled on the inning, the Bobcats were ahead 5-0.

Goodman-Pembine couldn’t answer in its half of the inning and Florence quickly came back to the plate.

McLain added another run for Florence in the top of the second and the lead was up to 6-0.

In the third, the Bobcats quickly racked up two outs and it seemed like the Patriots were going to stop the bleeding.

However, a Kelley single and another McLain RBI made it a 9-0 game. By the end of the inning, Florence held an 11-0 advantage.

Steber drove in the Bobcats’ final run of the game in the top of the fifth and they took home a 12-0 win.

Kelley picked up the win on the mound for Florence. He pitched three innings and struck out five.

Steber closed out the final two innings with four strikeouts.

Offensively, McLain led the Bobcats going 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs, a triple and three stolen bases. Kelley was also 3 for 4 at the dish.

Kelley, Thompson, Mason Koski and Steber each recorded a stolen base.

Kelley, Steber, Thompson and Carter Reed all tallied one RBI.

The Bobcats are back home today at 4:30 p.m. against Crandon.
