Nordics dominate Wolves in doubleheader

FELCH TOWNSHIP — The North Dickinson varsity softball team made quick work of Carney-Nadeau in a Skyline Central Conference doubleheader Monday at Hardwood Hall in Felch Township.

The Nordics picked up a 12-0 win to start the day and an 18-12 win to end the day. They are now 6-7 on the year.

Game One

It was all North Dickinson from the start in the first game of the day against the Wolves.

After retiring the side in order, the Nordics got things kicked off in the bottom of the first. Aspen Anderson was the first Nordic to get on base as she reached on a Carney-Nadeau error, bringing Lauren Jungwirth to the dish. She sent a shot over the left field fence and North Dickinson led 2-0.

In the second, the Nordics used two free passes and two errors to move the lead to 4-0. Then with two outs, Anderson scored another run on a triple that put them ahead 5-0.

North Dickinson kept its momentum going in the third as they scored two runs. Jungwirth scored the first on a wild pitch and Mary Grace Holmes brought in the other with a single. The Wolves trailed 7-0 after three innings.

The Nordics tacked on five runs in the fourth to secure the 12-0 mercy win.

Janessa Chartier picked up the win for North Dickinson. She struck out four in five innings.

Jungwirth led the Nordics’ offense with a 2 for 2 performance at the plate. She also recorded three RBIs and a walk. Ava Oman, Aly Steinbrecher and Khloe Roberts each recorded one stolen base and a walk.

Game Two

Carney opened the first inning with a run. However, the Nordics tacked on six in the bottom half of the frame.

They added three more in the second and took a 9-1 lead.

The Wolves answered with a seven run third inning and cut the lead to 9-8.

North Dickinson scored two in the third and six in the fourth to take a 17-8 lead.

It scored a run in the sixth to lock up the 18-12 victory.

Oman started the game on the mound for the Nordics. Zoey Mattson and Chartier also pitched in the game. Chartier picked up the win and struck out five.

Roberts led North Dickinson with five RBIs and three stolen bases. She was 3 for 5 at the plate.

Anderson, Jungwirth, Kiira Ledzian, Dalaney Steinbrecher and Homes each tallied one RBI.

KNIGHTS 5, BRONCOS 4

BARK RIVER — The Norway varsity softball team gained ground in the Skyline Central Conference on Monday as it swept Bark River-Harris in a doubleheader in Bark River.

The Knights held on for a 5-4 win to start the day and ended things with a 13-6 victory.

Game One

Neither team could break through in the first two innings and they played to a 0-0 tie heading into the third.

After blanking Norway, the Broncos scored two runs in the bottom of the third and held a 2-0 lead. They would add another run in the fourth and another in the fifth as the lead grew to 4-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights responded. They scored four runs in the inning and tied things at four.

Then in the top of the seventh, Norway made its move. After getting two runners on base, Payton Paquette hit a line drive to third that the Broncos couldn’t handle and a run scored. The Knights took a 5-4 lead.

They would hold on to pick up game one of the SCC doubleheader.

Jordyn Moln picked up the win on the mound for Norway. She pitched seven innings and struck out two.

Emma Dube and Anna Debidary each recorded an RBI. Kara Stanchina notched a stolen base.

Game Two

Norway went right to work in the second game and opened with a big first inning. Moln kicked off the scoring with a single that brought Stanchina home.

The Knights added three runs on two Bark River errors and they held a 4-0 advantage.

They retired the Broncos in order and added four more runs to their total in the second. Norway led 8-0.

The Broncos would respond, but it was already over as the Knights cruised to a 13-6 win.

Stanchina picked up the win for Norway. She pitched seven innings and struck out 10.

Moln led the Knights with three RBIs. Dube added two while Paquette and Tessa Castelaz recorded one apiece. Victoria Cooper and Emily Marier each drew two walks.

BRAVES 17, FLIVVERS 6

GLADSTONE — The Kingsford varsity softball team gave Gladstone a run for its money in a doubleheader Monday in Gladstone.

The Flivvers lost the first game, 17-6, but picked up a 10-6 win to close the day.

Game One

After trading runs in the first inning, Kingsford’s offense took control. The Flivvers started the inning off with back-to-back walks, bringing Ady Weber to the plate.

She drove in a run on a double. Then Anna Bortolini brought Eden Janousek home on a ground out.

Kingsford took a 4-1 lead into the third. It added a run in the frame and led 5-1.

However, the Braves scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-5 lead. They would score eight more runs and the game ended in the fifth inning.

Weber started the game for Kingsford. Jenna Viau also pitched for the Flivvers. She recorded one strikeout.

Bortolini, Weber, Carly Smith and Viau each tallied an RBI.

Viau had six stolen bases while Bortolini and Addy Kriegl each had two.

Game Two

Kingsford responded in the second game. By the end of the second, it held a 6-2 advantage.

The Flivvers scored three more runs in the third and took an 8-2 lead.

Gladstone would try to rally, but the Kingsford lead was too much and they rolled to a 10-6 win.

Regan Cram picked up the win for the Flivvers. She pitched seven innings and fanned four.

Weber led Kingsford with three RBIs. She was 3 for 4 at the plate. Bortolini had two RBIs.

Viau and Kailey Sundquist each drew two walks.

GREMLINS 16, MOUNTAINEERS 1

HOUGHTON — The Iron Mountain softball team took its talents up to Houghton on Monday for a doubleheader with the Gremlins. However, things didn’t go the Mountaineers way.

They ended up losing the first game 16-1 and then they lost 17-2 to Houghton.

Game One

After two innings, the Gremlins held a 12-0 lead.

The Mountaineers responded in the top of the third and cut the lead to 12-1 after Vivian Pertrusch scored on a Houghton error.

Houghton notched four runs in the bottom of the frame to lock up the 16-1 three-inning win.

Ashlyn Bal started the game for Iron Mountain.

She pitched three innings and struck out three.

Bal and Petrusch each recorded a hit for the Mountaineers.

Game Two

Iron Mountain used a Petrusch single in the bottom of the first to take its first lead of the day.

However, it wouldn’t last long as the Gremlins scored nine runs in the bottom half of the inning. They held a 9-1 advantage.

After the second inning, the Houghton lead had ballooned to 15-1.

Juliana Tapio scored a run in the third for Iron Mountain, but the Gremlins ended things with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to secure the win.

Macy Linsenbigler took the bump for the Mountaineers in the game. She pitched 2.1 innings and struck out two.

Bal recorded the only RBI in the game for IM. Petrusch and Tapio each recorded a hit.
