Norway dominates Jeffers

NORWAY — Although there were tense moments, the Norway varsity baseball team looked dominant on Wednesday as it toppled Jeffers in a non-conference game at Mike Maule Field.

The Knights ended up taking the game, 4-3.

Norway is now 14-2-1 on the season.

A two-out double from senior Alex Ortman scored Cameron Varda in the bottom of the first and Norway took a 1-0 lead over the Jets.

Bryce Adams scored on a groundout from AJ Gallino in the second as the lead grew to two runs.

Landon Amundson followed the same gameplan in the third, scoring on an Ortman groundout, as the Knights stretched the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maddex Burklund took advantage of a Jeffers’ error to give Norway a 4-0 advantage.

Owen Baij started the game on the mound for the Knights. He held the Jets hitless through four innings. He ended the day with four strikeouts.

“(It was) great to see Owen Baij back on the mound,” Norway head coach Tony Adams said. “I thought he battled all game, found a rhythm and then fought through fatigue at the end.”

However, in the top of the fifth inning, Jeffers made its move. It scored three runs off of one hit and suddenly the Knights’ advantage was down to 4-3.

“Alex Ortman and AJ Gallino came through with really good two strike at-bats,” coach Adams said. “We had adversity in the fifth and our kids kept it together. This had the feel of a tournament game and Turner was really good for Jeffers.”

Cody Turner picked up the loss for the Jets. He struck out eight batters in six innings of work.

Ortman led the way with two RBIs. Burklund led the Knights with two hits. He was 2 for 2 at the dish with a stolen base. Varda also recorded a stolen base. Varda, Landon Amundson and Ortman each notched a hit.

Norway returns to play today with a trip to Lodal Park to face Kingsford at 4 p.m.
