Bimbo’s reigns in Class B at Gold Medal Classic

HERMANSVILLE — Bimbo’s Wine Press of Iron Mountain’s Marcus Johnson netted a game-high 18 points and was awarded the Frank Rodman trophy as Outstanding Player in Class B at the Gold Medal Classic.

Johnson and the wine makers cruised to 73-53 win Sunday over Lee’s Greenery of Powers in the Class B championship game at the Frank Rodman Community Club in Hermansville.

The double-elimination format eight-team bracket saw Lee’s and Bimbo’s play one another Sunday morning in the winner’s bracket final, with a Bimbo’s victory sending Lee’s into the loser’s bracket.

In other Class B action, Bimbo’s defeated U.P. Rehab of Marquette, 100-98 in double overtime Saturday morning.

Johnson poured in a game-high 30 points and Joey Pontbriand added 23 for Bimbo’s.

Also on Saturday, Shamco of Iron River cruised past Team Elevated of Republic, 95-66. Caden Pellizzer scored a game-high 21 points, while Kurt Lehmann added 16 for Shamco.

U.P. Rehab team captain and Crystal Falls native Austin Carlson powered in a weekend-high 32 points in a 91-73 victory over 3’s Company of Escanaba Saturday evening.

After capturing nine consecutive Class B championships, Bloniarz Farms of Perronville was eliminated on Saturday.

The farmers defeated Shamco, 60-52 but were defeated in their following two contests. Lee’s Greenery triumphed over Bloniarz, 60-48 despite a game-high 17 points from former North Central and Michigan Tech standout Dawson Bilski of Bloniarz.

Bilski and fellow NC alum Travis Vincent combined for 42 points in a 79-69 loss to U.P. Rehab Saturday night. Carlson netted 17 points and former NMU and Gladstone cager Reece Castor added 15 for U.P. Rehab.

Shamco eliminated MTU Club Saturday night, 65-58. Lehmann, Pellizzer and Bryan LaChapelle Jr. combined for 37 for the loggers.

The Junior High Boys Division was won by Got Milk of Daggett, with Bark River-Harris as runner-up. The Junior High Girls Division winners were North Dickinson, while Carney finished as runner-up.
