Adams shines at D2 track district

Two Iron Mountain athletes claim firsts

PICKFORD — Norway’s Lauren Adams put together a memorable performance with three individual victories at Friday’s MHSAA Division 2 District 44 track meet in Pickford.

The junior won the 100 meters in 13.97 seconds, the 200 in 29.02 and the 400 in 1:05.85.

Three other local individual athletes earned titles as well, two from Iron Mountain. Senior Bryce Davis captured the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 1.5 inches, while classmate Aiden Ellis posted a victory in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 7.25 inches.

Davis and Ellis also teamed with Alex Jayne and Cooper Pigeon to win the 400 relay in 48.08.

Norway junior Josh Schiltz was triumphant in the discus with a 134.9. He also finished second in the shot put.

In the boys team standings, the Mountaineers (24) placed third behind champion Pickford (69) and runner-up Munising (31). Bark River-Harris (22), Norway (21) and Rudyard (20) rounded out the field.

Pickford also won girls team title with 60 points. Munising placed second (40), Bark River-Harris finished third (35), the Knights took fourth (21), the Mountaineers wound up fifth (16) and Rudyard (15) closed out the field in sixth.

The top four individual and relay finishers earned their spots in the MHSAA U.P. Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 31 at Kingsford High School.

Additional Iron Mountain individual qualifiers included Ellis (second in the 100, fourth in the discus), Dove (fourth in the 100, the 200 and the high jump), Bella Pickett (second in the 100, the 200 and the long jump) and Zahra Wicks (second in the high jump).

Mountaineer relay teams that moved on included the boys 800 relay of Jayne, Pigeon, Ethan Davis and Bryce Davis, the girls 400 relay of Pickett, Alysia Wood, Emma Bouchard and Wicks, the girls 800 relay of Bouchard, Olivia Geneva, Wood and Wicks, the girls 1,600 relay of Whitney Siren, Lindsey Lewandowski, Geneva and Bouchard and the girls 3,200 relay of Siren, Cadence Lucas, Geneva and Brandi Ciochetto.

For Norway, individual U.P. qualifiers included Anthony Pineda (second in the 200 and fourth in the 400), Mason Trudeau (second in the long jump), Owen McDonald (fourth in the 110 hurdles), Abby Richter (third in the 100 hurdles, fourth in the 100) and Jessa Rossler (fourth in the 800).

The Knights’ boys 800 relay team of Andrew Hautamaki, Kaleb Lapine, Pineda and Trudeau placed second while the 400 relay team of Hautamki, Lapine, Schiltz and Trudeau finished third.

Additionally, the Knights’ 400 girls relay team of Richter, Rossler, Mary Cavagnetto and Adams placed third to qualify for the U.P. Finals.
