Bobcats pounce on Elcho

Norway blanks Niagara

The Florence Bobcats exploded for 11 runs over the fourth and fifth innings and went on to bury the Elcho Hornets 17-2 in 5 1/2-innings in a Northern Lakes Conference tussle Tuesday in Elcho.

Florence recorded a single tally in the top of the first only to see Elcho score two in the bottom of the frame. But the Bobcat offense had just gotten started and added five runs in the second to go up 6-2.

The two big middle innings spelled the end for the Hornets.

Trent McLain led Florence with three hits, including a double, and five RBIs. Carter Reed ripped two doubles and a single, scored three runs and knocked in four.

Other offensive contributors included Bradley Steber with three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs, Kade Larson with two runs driven in, Breyson Kelley with two RBIs and Matthew Smith with two singles and a run scored.

Larson got the start for the Bobcats and pitched four innings for the win. He allowed one earned run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Smith relieved in the fifth and allowed one hit and one walk while fanning two.

Owen Baij drove in four runs while Cole Baij and Elliott Kraemer knocked in two each to lead Norway to a 10-0 5 1/2-inning victory Tuesday over host Niagara.

Norway’s Bryce Adams and Cameron Varda combined for a no-hitter as well.

The Knights took the lead in the first with a run then added four more in the third. Norway closed out the scoring with five in the fifth.

Owen Baij recorded Norway’s lone extra-base hit with a double. He also scored two runs, as did his brother Cole, Cameron Varda, Landon Amundson and Bryce Adams. Landon Ross chipped in with an RBI.

Adams started and posted the win for the Knights. He worked four innings, walked one and struck out five. Varda pitched the final inning with one walk and two strikeouts.

“Bryce was really good and efficient on the mound and Cameron finished off the no-hitter,” Norway coach Tony Adams said. “With eight games this week, our pitching is in good shape so far.

“Landon Amundson, Owen, Cole, and Elliott had big days at the plate which is great to see. We have improved in many areas but still need to keep pushing in others.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
