IRON MOUNTAIN — Kingsford plated six runs in the top of the first inning and pounded Iron Mountain 12-0 in five innings Monday afternoon at LiUNA Field.
The big first inning was more than enough for junior Jack Kriegl, who pitched the whole game for the Flivvers, striking out 10 batters while allowing just a single and no walks.
“Jack pitched really well, throwing lots of strikes,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “I thought the guys came out, played baseball the way its supposed to be played. Unfortunately, Iron Mountain had some things go sour for them. They’re young, and they’re going to be fine. We needed to come play good baseball with some big conference games ahead. That’s what we’re focused on, come out here and play well.”
A couple of errors and two walks helped Kingsford (6-5) send all nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Senior Joey Weber knocked in a run with a single, and senior Andres Finley also singled in the frame.
A two-run triple to the corner in right by senior Nic Novara made it 8-0 Kingsford in the second. Kingsford added two more runs in each third and fourth innings.
Finley finished with two of Kingsford’s nine hits. Senior Garrett Brown added a hit and RBI. Junior Jacob Deuter, senior Nolan Hendrickson, junior Cole Baciak and senior Gavin Grondin also contributed hits.
Senior Jake Powell knocked a one-out single to left in the fourth inning for Iron Mountain’s lone hit. Connor Pickett started for Iron Mountain, which used several pitchers in the game. The Mountaineer staff recorded two strikeouts and four walks. Iron Mountain committed five total errors in the game.
“We hit the ball when we needed to, ran the bases well when we needed to,” Kriegl said. “We just did a lot of good things. Hopefully it carries over the rest of the week.”
