KINGSFORD — With focus quickly shifting toward the postseason, the Kingsford Flivvers wrapped up the Great Northern Conference varsity baseball title Wednesday evening at Gary Spigarelli Memorial Field, quickly dismantling Menominee 15-0 in four innings.

A nine-run first inning powered the Flivvers to their sixth straight win, as the team improved to 15-8 with a 7-1 mark in league play.

“Winning the conference is nice,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “Escanaba will take second. They’ve got a real good team, we’ll see them in the district. I’m just happy for the seniors. What a core group. It’s a special group.”

Kingsford honored its seven seniors after the ballgame Wednesday with an on-field celebration that included parents, family, friends and Little Leaguers circling the infield as the seniors rounded the bases. The team presented seniors Joey Weber, Nic Novara, Gavin Grondin, Gavin Trevillian, Garrett Brown, Nolan Hendrickson and Andres Finley with personalized wooden bats as gifts.

All of Kingsford’s seniors (other than Novara who is injured) scored at least once in Wednesday’s rout, with a hit by Finley ending the game via the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Finley was 4-for-4 with four RBI and a double. He had two hits and three RBI in the first inning alone when the Flivvers sent 12 batters to the plate. That included his two-run double, a rocket that split the gap in left center.

Trevillian earned the victory on the mound, an overpowering fastball and effective slider among his arsenal of pitches proving too much for the Maroon hitters. Trevillian allowed just a first-inning single while striking out nine of the 16 total batters he faced with two walks.

“He’s healthy now and pitching well,” Kriegl said. “Hopefully he can keep throwing and locating that fastball.”

Trevillian was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI. Grondin went 2-for-3 with a double over the fence and two runs scored.

Brown added a RBI hit and scored three times. Junior Jacob Deuter shot a ball down the line past third for a RBI hit in the first and executed a sacrifice bunt to move a runner in the second, and sophomore Logan Grondin continued to impress with a 3-for-3 effort with two RBI and two runs scored, as the Flivvers smacked 17 hits.

“It was nice to jump out to a lead again,” Kriegl said. “We’ve been doing that the past few games. Hopefully we can keep that trend going and see what happens.”

Looking ahead to the May 30 district, the Flivvers will face Sault Ste. Marie to open. That game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Central time at Escanaba’s Al Ness Field. The Eskymos face Houghton ahead of that in the other contest with the winners meeting for the district title at 3 p.m.

“We know what’s what coming,” Kriegl said. “We’ve got the Soo, and if we can beat the Soo, we’re probably going to see Lenny (Peacock) and Escanaba. But we’ve got to get through the first one. We don’t want to overlook that. We’ve got a big hurdle coming in front us, but I think we’re hitting the ball well.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
