Flivvers rout Gogebic, hang on for 4-2 win over Northland Pines

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Another quick start for the Kingsford offense set the tone for a pair of victories Saturday at Northland Pines High School.
The Flivvers scored seven times in the first inning and rolled Gogebic 13-1 in six innings, and then built a 4-0 lead against Northland Pines before holding on for a 4-2 victory.
“Hats off to Northland Pines for inviting us to come play here,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “This is a beautiful facility and this is exactly what we needed to do this late in our season, is get some doubleheaders and play.”
Just like Thursday’s rout of Houghton when Kingsford exploded for a nine-run first inning, the Flivvers wasted no time against Gogebic. Batting around the order, the Flivvers provided more than enough to cruise to victory.
Kingsford’s 13 runs came on eight hits, as the Flivvers also took advantage of six walks and some fielding mistakes by the Miners.
Senior Garrett Brown went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs, five stolen bases and a RBI. Senior Andres Finley belted a two-run double in the first and hit a sacrifice fly for a third RBI in the fourth. Senior Gavin Trevillian was 1-for-3 with a RBI, a walk and three runs. Senior Gavin Grondin ripped a triple and had an RBI. Junior Jack Kriegl was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Junior Jacob Deuter went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
It was all more than enough for the starting pitcher Finley, who went three and 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out six. Brown came on in scoreless relief and allowed just one additional hit while striking out three.
Against Northland Pines, the Flivvers jumped ahead 4-0 after four but had to work out of some late-inning pressure spots to preserve the lead.
Kingsford grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Recent JV call-up sophomore Logan Grondin singled to lead off the inning and made his way around the bases with help from a sacrifice bunt by Deuter and came home when senior Nolan Hendrikson grounded into a fielder’s choice.
A ball put in play by Brown drove in another run in the third to make it 2-0. Two more runs scored in the fourth, as the Flivvers loaded the bases thanks to a lead off single by Gavin Trevillian, an error that allowed Logan Grondin to reach and then a walk to Deuter. Hendrickson put a ground ball in play to drive in one and another circled home on the Eagles’ second error of the inning.
A lead-off triple led to the Eagles’ first run in the sixth inning. The Flivvers then walked the bases loaded with two away but managed to escape unscathed by getting an inning-ending pop fly to first base.
Northland Pines got another run in the seventh as a single and two more walks helped loaded the bases with one away. The run came in on a wild pitch, but the damage was contained as Brown got consecutive pop outs to leave the runners stranded at second and third and secure the save.
Kingsford finished with five hits, two of those coming from Logan Grondin, who has provided a definite spark and energy for the Flivvers since moving up from JV.
Trevillian collected the win on the hill. He pitched four innings and allowed just two hits and a single walk, while fanning seven. Senior Joey Weber, Gavin Grondin and Brown all added relief, limiting the Eagles to a total of six hits.
“We played consistent, maybe got a little tired at the end but we just have to keep our momentum going, keep our focus and that’s why we’re playing doubleheaders,” Kriegl said.
The Flivvers (12-8) are scheduled for a pair of games at Houghton this afternoon.
