KINGSFORD — Junior Jacob Deuter had two of Kingsford’s six hits, stole two bases and scored two runs, and the Flivver pitching staff allowed just one hit in a 10-0 five-inning victory over North Dickinson on Friday afternoon at Gary Spigarelli Field.
The Flivvers (9-7) scored their first three runs without the benefit of a hit, taking a 3-0 lead after three. Kingsford then sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring six times to put the game out of reach. Senior Andres Finley provide a two-out, run-scoring single to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
The game was a late add-on to the schedule, with the Nordics having an open date and looking to play.
“It’s always nice to pick up a game here and there, and it was nice to see some of the North Dickinson players who I watched come up through Little League,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “The have some really nice-looking athletes. Unfortunately for them, and just like what happened to us the night before in Negaunee, they made a few errors which makes it tough to come back from.”
The Nordic defense committed four errors in the contest, two of those coming in the Flivvers’ big fourth inning.
Along with Deuter and Finley, the Flivvers also got singles from seniors Gavin Trevillian and Gavin Grondin, along with sophomore Bradlee Bottesi.
Trevillian scored the first run in the game in the second, stealing home with senior Nic Novara at the plate. The Flivvers were looking to pull off a squeeze bunt, but Novara pulled his bat back after Trevillian had already broken from third for the plate. Luckily for Kingsford, Trevillian was able to slide in under the tag.
Junior Jack Kriegl reached in all four of his plate appearances, walking three times and scoring two runs. ND issued nine total walks in the contest.
Trevillian worked a pair of hitless innings with three strikeouts to open the game before giving way to freshman Domenic Frederickson and senior Joey Weber who helped up the ND strikeout total to eight.
Brady Jungwirth singled in the fourth inning for the Nordics’ lone hit but was then gunned down by Kriegl attempting to steal second.
The Flivvers suffered a pair of losses up in Negaunee on Thursday afternoon, falling 6-3 and 7-5. Kingsford trailed 6-0 in the first game before finally breaking through in the fifth. Senior Garrett Brown had two singles as Kingsford totaled six hits in the loss.
The Flivvers then saw a 4-1 lead vanish in the second game, as a couple of errors in the bottom of the fourth opened the door for the Miners to plate six runs. Kriegl had a pair of hits, and Finley added a double to pace the Flivvers’ eight-hit effort.
The Flivvers head to Escanaba for a key Great Northern Conference matchup on Tuesday.
