Flivvs take 2; Knights down IM

Mya Brunswick threw a five-inning shutout in the first game of a doubleheader against Menominee and then singled in a key run in the top of the eighth in the second game as the Flivvers swept the Maroons in a Great Northern Conference twinbill in Menominee.

In Kingsford’s 10-0 victory in the opening game, Kailey Sundquist put her team on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single. The Flivvers added three runs in the second inning on run-scoring hits by Jazz Shaughnessy and Anna Bortolini and a passed ball.

Kingsford scored three more times in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by Addy Kriegl, a run-scoring single by Eden Janousek and a RBI walk by Bortolini.

Brunswick allowed three hits in the victory, with six strikeouts and no walks.

Shaughnessy, Bortolini, Janousek and Sundquist provided two hits each, while Sundquist stole two bases.

In Kingsford’s 6-4 eight-inning victory in the finale, the Flivvers rallied late with four runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 4-0 deficit and put the game into extra innings.

There, Kingsford scored a run on an error and Brunswick added an RBI single. She took over from starter Reagan Cram in the bottom of the frame and pitched a one-two-three eighth, striking out the side.

Bortolini led the Flivvers offensively in the nightcap with two hits in four trips and two stolen bases.

Cram pitched the first seven innings and earned the win. The lefty did not allow an earned run in her start. She surrendered five hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Nine Norway Knights drove in runs in their five-inning victory over visiting Iron Mountain Monday.

Senior Emma Dube led the way with three RBIs. Kendall Burklund, Jordyn Moln, Lilly Tomlanovich, Aidan Fisher, Ashley Carlson, Tessa Castelaz, Emilee Temrowski and Arianna Porthouse drove in a run each.

Kara Stanchina and Burklund both scored three runs, while Anna deBidart crossed the plate twice.

Castelaz belted a triple for Norway’s lone extra-base hit.

The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the first, added three in the second and then tallied nine more in the third.

Burklund got the start in the circle and pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Stanchina finished the shutout with three innings of work, allowing one hit and no walks with six strikeouts.
