IM tennis falls to Gladstone

KINGSFORD — Iron Mountain captured the top two doubles flights but couldn’t keep pace with Gladstone in the other matches as the Braves scored a 6-2 victory over the Mountaineers on Wednesday at Kingsford High School.

No. 1 doubles tandem Oskar Kangas-Evan Copley knocked off Max Wilson-Gideon Barron 6-3, 6-2, while the No. 2 doubles pairing of Ben Truong-Dylan Lindgren beat Matthew Hagebusch-Sam Hedman 6-3, 6-2.

No. 1 singles Malakai Broersma came up just short of winning his match, falling to Tyler Soderman 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Braves also captured the two other singles matches played. Teagan Reynolds upended Lucian Breault 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Brant Veeser toppled Seth Greenleaf 6-0, 6-0.

Gladstone took the No. 4 singles match in a forfeit.

“We are very young in singles with three sophomores, so we’ve struggled a bit there,” IM coach Keith Huotari said. “But the guys are improving. Malakai (will) win his share of matches in the last few weeks.”

In the other two doubles matches, Gladstone’s Blake Lesnieski-Nick Thill defeated Hunter Baumgartner-Phil Miziniak 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 flight, while Logan Veeser-Alex Beauchamp bested Di’Angelo Saldana and Jaqai Smith 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4.

“We’re still finding our way as a team, but we’ve been more competitive in several matches,” Huotari said.
