IM’s Davis wins shot put at Negaunee Invite

NEGAUNEE — Iron Mountain senior Bryce Davis defeated the field in the shot put at the 10-team co-ed Negaunee Lions Invitational on Friday.

Davis’ effort registered at 44 feet, 10 inches to post the lone win for local athletes at the event.

Team-wise in the boys competition, Marquette easily outdistanced all teams with 213 points. Kingsford was second at 82 with Negaunee third at 66. Menominee (46), Houghton (43), Gladstone (38), Iron Mountain (14), Westwood (9), Escanaba (8) and Gwinn (4) followed.

Several Flivver athletes finished in the top three, led individually by Gaige Sorenson with a runner-up finish in the long jump (21-5).

Jack Olson and Sid Olson posted two third-place results each — Jack in the 100- and 200-meter runs and Sid in the two hurdles races.

Additionally, Kaleb Fornetti wound up third in the 400 and Mason Tappy took third in the shot put.

The Flivvers’ 400 relay and 3,200 relay finished second in their races. The 400 squad was comprised of Sorenson, Jaricho Hudson and the Olsons, while the 3,200 team was comprised of Cavan Mulligan, Kaleb Fornetti, Tyler Phelps and Blake Tomasoski.

Sorenson, Hudson, Ben Fornetti and Jack Olson finished third in the 800 relay.

Iron Mountain’s 800 relay team of Alex Jayne, Cooper Pigeon, Ethan Davis and Bryce Davis placed fourth.

Negaunee won the girls trophy with 202 points, followed by Marquette with 103, Gladstone with 67, Houghton with 49.5 and Kingsford with 27. Westwood (23), Menominee (22), Escanaba (21), Iron Mountain (6.5) and Gwinn (2) rounded out the field.

Kingsford was led by its 800-relay team of Mylee Kreider, Ivy Van Ooyen, Sophia Fornetti and Maddy Krieder, which finished second in 1:59.49. The same group also placed third in the 400 relay.

Individually, Maria Murvich took fourth in the 1,600, while Mylee Kreider finished fourth in the long jump.

Senior Bella Pickett paced the Mountaineer girls with a fourth in the 100. She also placed fifth in the 400 relay with Olivia Geneva, Brandi Ciochetto and Zahra Wicks.
