Johnson sweeps hurdles at Stephenson

Florence senior Kamdan Johnson captured both the 100 and 300 hurdle races to lead local athletes at the co-ed Stephenson Lions Club Invitational on Tuesday.

Johnson, the two-time WIAA Division 3 100-meter hurdles champion, took that race in 16.26 seconds and the 300 hurdles in a time of 48.54 seconds.

Meanwhile in the team competitions, Forest Park led area teams with a runner-up finish in the girls standings and a third-place result in the boys standings.

In the girls final team results, Stephenson captured the title with 117.33 points, followed by the Lady Trojans with 84 and Florence-Niagara with 49. North Dickinson finished sixth with 47, Norway placed seventh with 36.33 and North Central wound up 12th win one point.

Munising and Bark River-Harris shared the boys crown with 98 points, while the Trojans took third with 84. The Knights finished fourth with 60, Florence-Niagara placed fifth with 58.33 and North Dickinson and North Central tied for 10th with 10 points.

Individually for the girls, Forest Park junior Elsie Williams topped the field in the long jump with a 16-4 and North Dickinson sophomore Aunika Lindholm won the 3,200 in 13:20.11.

Lindholm also contributed to the Nordics’ winning 3,200 relay team along with Taylor Dennocenzo, Raina Ledzian and Alyson Steinbrecher. The squad finished in 11 minutes, 11.47 seconds.

Area girls who finished in the top three in individual events included ND’s Lindholm (third in the 3,200), Florence-Niagara’s Karissa Smith (second in the long jump), Norway’s Abby Richter (third in the 100) and Lauren Adams (second in the 400, third in the 200) and North Dickinson’s Aubrey Applekamp (second in the high jump).

Additionally, the Lady Trojans’ second- or third-place finishers included Williams (third in the 400), Vienna Price (second in the 1,600 and third in the 800), Ava Fischer (second in the 100 hurdles and third in both the 300 hurdles and the pole vault), Bella Tarter (third in the 3,200) and Hailey Van Sickle (third in the 100 hurdles).

In girls relays, top three finishers included Florence-Niagara’s 1,600 relay squad of Johnson, Kelsi Chrisman, Marley Jones, Bryn Sullivan placed second while the 400-relay team of Nia Kinder, Tymarian Hannah, Lily Steinbrecher and Karissa Smith finished third.

For the boys, Norway’s Josh Schiltz won the discus with a 139-1 and North Central’s Spencer Willa captured the shot put 41-8.5. Two relay teams also won their races — the Florence-Niagara 1,600 relay team of Wyatt Dunkes, Christian Anderson, Luke Deterville in 3:41.7 and Truth Setner along with Forest Park’s 3,200 relay squad of Joey Mainville, William Hoffman, Max Mainville and Izaiah Tarter in 8:59.30.

Other individuals finishing in the top three included Norway’s Schiltz (second in the shot put), Anthony Pineda (second in the 200), Mason Trudeau (second in the long jump) and Owen McDonald (third in the 300 hurdles), North Dickinson’s Ricky Haney (third in the discus) and Florence-Niagara’s Setner (second in the 400, third in the 200) and Cameron Schiefelbein (third in the high jump).

Forest Park individuals in the top three included Tarter (second in the 3,200 and third in the 800), Dietrich Rasner (second in both hurdles races), Kevin Giuliani (second in the discus, third in the shot put), Vic Giuliani (second in the high jump) and Gabe Quevedo (third in the pole vault).

In the relays, Florence Niagara’s 3,200 relay team of Anderson, Wyatt Dunkes, Zane Phillips and Evan Parker placed second and its 800 relay group of Deterville, Dazavian Hannah, Ely Marefke and Owen Dunkes took third, Forest Park’s 1,600 relay team of Rasner, Hoffman, Joey Mainville and Max Mainville placed second and Norway’s 800 relay of Pineda, Trudeau, Andrew Hautamaki and Kaleb LaPine and the Knights’ 400 relay squad of Hautamaki, LaPine, Schiltz and Trudeau took third.
