Kingsford distance relay wins GNC title
The Kingsford boys 3,200-meter relay team of Cavan Mulligan, Reed DeGroot, Kaleb Fornetti and Blake Tomasoski earned a league title at the Great Northern Conference meet Monday at Flivver Field.
The squad — comprised of two sophomores, Mulligan and Tomasoski, and two seniors, DeGroot and Fornetti — finished in 8 minutes, 59.56 seconds to win the race by nearly 11 seconds and post the Flivvers’ lone championship on the day.
Marquette ran away with the boys title, compiling 207 points. The Flivvers were next up with 52, Gladstone placed third with 36, Menominee finished fourth with 34 and Escanaba wound up fifth with 24.
In the girls team competition, Gladstone came out on top with 129 points, in front of Marquette with 116, Escanaba with 52, the Flivvers with 37 and Menominee with 19.
Tomasoski led the Kingsford boys individually. Tomasoski finished runner-up in the 3,200 (10:45.58) and third in the 1,600 (4:47.40). Sid Olson took second in the 110 hurdles (16.36) and Gaige Sorenson finished runner-up in the long jump (19 feet, 5 inches).
Jack Olson recorded a third in the 100 (11.50) as did the 400-relay team of Sorenson, Jaricho Hudson and Jack and Sid Olson (46.35).
For the Flivver girls, senior Maddy Kreider led the way individually with a second in the 100 (13.48) and a second in the long jump with a personal best 15-4.
She also teamed with her sister Mylee, Avery Edwards and Sophia Fornetti to finish second in the 400 relay (54.02).
Sophomore Olivia Sage took third in the shot put (27-5) and freshman Gianna Novara placed third in the discus (72-2).
The Kingsford 800 relay squad of Maddy and Mylee Kreider, Fornetti and Ivy Van Ooyen also finished third (1:55.02).
