IRON MOUNTAIN — Onika Smeester scored a pair of goals to lead the Kingsford Flivvers to a 5-0 victory over Iron Mountain on Tuesday at Mountaineer Stadium.
Aubrie Moore added a goal and an assist, while Sophia Tappy and Kelsey Haelterman chipped in with a goal each.
The Flivvers scored all five goals in the first half.
“It was a beautiful night for soccer and both teams played great,” Kingsford coach Jenette Gunville said.
Iron Mountain coach Carly Lambert noted her team began the match well but was unable to keep pace.
“We started the first half super strong with multiple shots on goal in the first five minutes, but started to regress soon after,” she said. The girls aren’t used to the heat just yet.”
Lambert praised the play of freshman goalie Kenadie McArthur and junior Olivia Fleming.
“(Kenadie) showed impressive skill in the net despite the score,” Lambert said. “Olivia had multiple shots on goal and showed impressive hustle.”
Lambert also complimented her team’s ability to hold a high line and draw the Flivvers offside multiple times.
“Freshman Geraldine Sampoll really shined at defeat,” Lambert added. “Overall, it was a fun game and pretty lighthearted rivalry.”
