Knights take a pair from Miners
The Norway Knights combined for 27 runs in the two games of their doubleheader sweep of the Gogebic Miners on Wednesday at Ramsay Field in Bessemer Township.
In the first game, Kendall Burklund ripped a home run and drove in three to lead the Knights to an 8-1 victory. She also pitched a complete-game three hitter with nine strikeouts.
In the finale, Kara Stanchina smacked a home run and a double and knocked in five to spark Norway to a 19-8 triumph in five innings. Jordyn Moln did major damage as well with four RBIs.
In the opener, the Knights scored one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Aidan Fisher drove in two runs, while Lilly Tomlanovich, Kaylee Baldwin and Anna deBidart supplied one RBI each.
In a wild second game, the Miners pushed across single runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead. The Knights exploded for nine runs in the top of the third, but Gogebic came back with three in the bottom half to cut Norway’s lead to 9-5.
More offense was on the way. The Knights scored seven in the fourth and three more in the fifth to push their advantage to 19-5. The Miners tallied three in the bottom of the inning, but the game ended there.
Myah Gilroy added a double and two RBIs for Norway. Burklund doubled and added an RBI and two runs scored, Emma Dube contributed a triple, an RBI and a pair of runs scored, Payton Paquette drew two bases-loaded walks, Baldwin drove home a run and scored three times and deBidart added three runs scored as well.
Stanchina started in the circle for Norway and pitched four innings to get the win. She allowed five hits, four earned runs and a walk while striking out five.
