Olson, Sorenson lead KHS at track regional
HOUGHTON — Kingsford junior Jack Olson and sophomore Gaige Sorenson captured individual titles to lead the Flivvers’ U.P. Track and Field Finals qualifiers at Thursday’s MHSAA Division 1 Regional 42 track meet at Houghton.
Olson topped the field in the 100 meters in 11.54 seconds and Sorenson defeated his competition in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3 inches.
The top four finishers in each regional event qualified for the U.P. Finals on Saturday, May 31 at Kingsford High School.
Olson also qualified individually in the 200, finishing second in 23.62 seconds. Other Flivver individuals who booked their spots in the finals included Blake Tomasoski (second in the 1,600 and 3,200), Sid Olson (second in both hurdles races), Mason Tappy (second in the shot put), Tyler Phelps (third in the 400) and Kaleb Fornetti (fourth in the 400).
Three Kingsford boys relay teams also advanced — Sorenson, Jaricho Hudson and both Olsons (second in the 400 relay); Phelps, Ben Fornetti, Cavan Mulligan and Kaleb Fornetti (second in the 1,600) and Mulligan, Kaleb Fornetti, Reed DeGroot and Tomasoski (second in the 3,200 relay).
Overall, the Flivver boys finished runner-up in the team competition with 48.5 points. Houghton won the title with 53.25, Negaunee placed third with 44, Calumet finished fourth with 24.25 and Westwood wound up fifth with 17.
In the girls competition, senior Maddy Kreider and freshman Maria Murvich topped the Flivver individuals with second-place results.
Kreider recorded a 15-2.5 in the long jump, while Murvich ran a 5:43.84 in the 1,600.
Kreider also took third in the 100 (13.74) and her sophomore sister Mylee placed third in the long jump (14-11.5).
Three Flivver girls relay teams advanced as well. Ivy Van Ooyen and Sophia Fornetti joined the Kreider sisters in a second-place finish in the 400 relay (54.21) and a runner-up result in the 1,600 relay (1:53.71)
Mira Johnson, Aalayah Noasconi, Olivia Wescott and Lakyn Wallis finished fourth in the 3,200 relay (11:56) to advance.
Negaunee won the regional team title with 75.5 points. Houghton (51), Calumet (30.5), Kingsford (19) and Westwood (11) rounded out the field.
