Shamion paces Wykons; Ellis leads IM at Esky Invite
ESCANABA — West Iron County freshman Bristol Shamion and Iron Mountain senior Aiden Ellis led local athletes at the 14-team co-ed Escanaba Invitational on Friday.
Shamion was the lone local competitor to win an event, tying with Menominee junior Emily Schuettpelz for the top spot in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.
Ellis led local boys individual athletes with a runner-up finish in the long jump with a 19-5.
Two IM boys relay teams added seconds on the day. Ellis, Alex Jayne, Cooper Pigeon and Bryce Davis ran a 46.69 in the 400-meter relay to finish runner-up, while the 800 relay squad of Jayne, Pigeon, Ethan Davis and Bryce Davis wound up second with a 1:39.65.
Additionally for the Mountaineers, Bryce Davis (42-9) took fourth in the shot put and teammate Michael Dove (17-6) finished fourth in the long jump.
North Central senior Lane Gorzinski (25.47) placed third in the 200 to lead the Jets.
Tanner Nordstrom and Saul Kobussen paced the Wykons with fifth-place results. Nordstrom recorded a 42-1 in the shot put and Kobussen ran the 100 in 12.79.
In the girls event, West Iron freshman Eriana Sucholl (1:08.73) placed fourth in the 400, while Shamion wound up fifth in both the 100 hurdles (18.38) and the 300 hurdles (54.0).
North Central freshman Natalie Willa (29-9) led her team with a fourth-place result in the shot put and Iron Mountain senior Bella Pickett (14.47) paced the Mountaineers with a sixth-place finish in the 100.
The Mountaineer boys led local teams by taking eighth in the boys team standings with 33 points. Sault Ste. Marie captured the trophy with 131 points, followed by Houghton with 110.5. North Central placed 11th with six points and West Iron finished 12th with five points.
West Iron finished 10th in the girls team standings with 19 points, while North Central placed 12th with four points and Iron Mountain wound up 13th with one point.
Gladstone won the girls title with 115 points, followed by Sault Ste. Marie with 71.75 and Houghton with 68.75.
