Top-ranked Eskymos handle KHS; Florence defeats Goodman-Pembine

The Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association Division 2 top-ranked Escanaba Eskymos scored early and often in their doubleheader sweep of the Kingsford Flivvers in Great Northern Conference action Thursday in Escanaba.

In the opener, the Eskymos plated seven runs in the first and then burst out for 12 in the second to power past the Flivvers 19-0.

Esky belted three home runs along the way — a three-run homer by Harlee Coleman in the first, a two-run bomb by University of Michigan recruit Grayson LaMarche and a three-run smash by Landry Bray also in the second.

Sophomore Mya Brunswick suffered the loss for Kingsford. She pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed nine earned runs on 16 hits. She walked three and struck out one.

Grace Rice singled for the only hit the Flivvers got off Bray, who struck out seven in three innings.

In the second game, the Eskymos recorded two runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second and three in the third on their way to an 11-1 triumph.

The highlight of the day for Kingsford came when junior Karley Trevillian homered off LaMarche for the Flivvers’ run.

Jazz Shaughnessy recorded the other hit off LaMarche, who fanned 15 in 5 2/3 innings.

Reagan Cram started for the Flivvers and picked up the loss. The senior went five innings and allowed four earned runs and eight hits.

The Florence LadyCats broke a 1-all tie late with three runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to defeat Goodman-Pembine in Northern Lakes Conference competition Thursday.

“We had a slow start at the plate, but as the game went on we got going,” Florence coach Dan Robinson said.
