Wykon girls capture regional track title
The West Iron County girls track team topped Ironwood for the team championship of the MHSAA Division 2 Regional on Wednesday at Nelson Field in Iron River.
The Wykon girls recorded six wins on their way to scoring 55 points with the Red Devils second at 47.5. Ishpeming took third with 30.5, Hancock placed fourth with 26, Gwinn finished fifth with 18 and Painesdale-Jeffers wound up sixth with nine points.
In the boys team competition, Ironwood took the title with 64 points, followed by Gwinn with 59, West Iron with 37, Ishpeming with 12, Hancock with seven and Painesdale-Jeffers with four.
The top four individual finishers and the top relay team advance to the U.P. Finals set for Saturday, May 31, at Kingsford High School.
West Iron freshman Bristol Shamion stood out on the day with four first-place results. Shamion captured the 200 (29.12 seconds), the 100 hurdles (18.05), the 300 hurdles (51.64) and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet.
WIC senior Cheyenne Ritchie registered a victory in the 100 (14.31), while freshman Eriana Sucholl topped the field in the 400 in 1:08.41.
West Iron also won the 800 relay with Ritchie, Lily De Sousa, Lacey Shamion and Sucholl, as well as the 1,600 relay with De Sousa, Lacey Shamion, Grace Smith and Sucholl.
Other Wykon girls who advanced to the U.P. Finals were Kendall McDonald in the 100, Sucholl in the 200, Smith in the 400, Rowyn Fiszer in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Lacey Shamion in the long jump and Natalie Walsh in the shot put.
For the Wykon boys, freshman Seth Oberlin advanced with a first in the 400 (49.8) and a third in the 800 as did Alex Ghiggia, who won the regional shot put title with a toss of 44 feet.
Other West Iron boys who qualified for the U.P. meet were Saul Kobussen in the 100 and 200, Gatlin Gillaspie in the 200 and Tanner Nordstrom in the shot put.
West Iron also placed its 400 relay team of Kobussen, Gillaspie, Paxton Sapalicio and Christian Robles in the U.P. finals by virtue of its first-place finish (49.8) at the regional meet.
