LA CROSSE, Wis. — Florence High School senior Kamdan Johnson’s effort to win her third consecutive WIAA State Track & Field Division 3 100-hurdles title ended when she fell early in the finals Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium Complex on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Johnson, who was seeded second in the championship race after she won her preliminary heat in 14.90 seconds on Friday, tripped on the fourth hurdle and fell to the ground, never to get to her feet again.
“Obviously, not the outcome I was hoping for (and) this had actually been the first time I had ever fallen, so for it to be at this particular race did not help (my) emotions either,” Johnson said Sunday.
Cadott junior Iszy Sonnentag, who had the top prelim time (14.80) set a D3 state record of 14.48 to win the title.
Later in the day, Sonnentag, who is a former state runner-up wrestler, also won the 400 meters and the long jump championships.
“Going into the race I knew I had to run a fast time,” Johnson said. “The moment the gun went off, I set my mind to being the first one to the (first) hurdle, which I believe I was.
“After, I kept pushing my foot speed to try and gain ground. By the time I reached the fourth hurdle, I was too focused on speed and didn’t bring my lead leg high enough to clear the hurdle.”
Johnson had also qualified for the state 300 hurdles championship race but was unable to compete after her fall.
And so closes the prep career of one of the most illustrious athletic performers ever at Florence High School.
“Although it is hard for me to look past the outcome from this race, I am still very grateful for everything high school track has taught me and (I) will dearly miss it.
“I am further grateful to my hurdle coach Greg (Brownson), who has helped me along this journey. And to all who have been there to support me along the way.”
Johnson will continue her track career at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. next season.
