Norway softball will contend for a regional championship Saturday at Ishpeming, facing Bessemer at 1 p.m. Eastern time.

In the other regional semifinal, Lake Linden-Hubbell faces Eben Junction Superior Central. The championship game is set for 3 p.m. Eastern time Saturday.

The Knights captured the district title in Bark River on Friday with a 13-0 five-inning win over North Dickinson.

Norway freshman Kendall Burklund tossed a no-hitter in the championship game, striking out 11 and walking three.

“We beat them earlier during the season, but you never know,” said Norway coach Robert “Kuba” Bal. “Our girls came out and played well. Kendall Burklund had a good day. The defense played well.”

Norway's Anna deBidart greets her teammates after smashing a home run Friday.

At the plate, Burklund lashed two doubles and a single. The Knights also got multi-hit games from Anna deBidart, a home run and single; Payton Paquette, a double and single; and Jordyn Moln, two singles.

“A big help was Anna deBidart with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. That was her first,” Bal said. “Whenever you can get a home run it really helps the cause — we like to see it.”

Kaylee Baldwin and Aidan Fisher added singles in the Knights’ 11-hit effort. Norway also drew six walks, led by Fisher and Lilly Tomlanovich with two apiece.

In their district opener, Norway ousted Stephenson 19-0 in three innings. Burklund pitched a perfect two innings, striking out five. Kara Stanchina worked the final inning, also perfect, fanning two.

“We adjusted to the slower pitching and took some walks,” Bal said. “Stephenson is a new program, I like the direction the coach has them going. I think they’re on the right track.”

Stanchina paced the Norway offense with two singles and four RBIs. Also getting key hits were Tessa Castelaz, three RBIs, and deBidart, two RBIs.

Anna Porthouse, Ashley Carlson, Emilee Temrowski and Emilee Marier also added singles

in the eight-hit attack. The Knights drew 11 walks in their two innings at the plate, with Burklund, Moln and Paquette each getting two.

North Dickinson had advanced to the final with a 19-9 win over Bark River-Harris and a 25-0 drubbing of Carney-Nadeau.

The Knights enter regional play with an overall record of 28-8. Bessemer is 16-10 on the season, including a pair of doubleheader losses to Norway.

“You know the old cliche — it’s hard to beat a team three times. Can we beat the team five times? I guess we’ll find out Saturday,” said Bal. “The last time I was pleased with our performance about a week and a half ago up there. I hope our team shows up like they did in that game.”

Lake Linden-Hubbell comes into the tournament with a 27-4 record, including a doubleheader split against Norway on April 17.

“They’re solid, quality team,” Bal said of LL-H. “But all we’re thinking now is to get ready for the semifinal.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
