Knights reign at district level for 6th straight year

Norway overcame a slow start and defeated North Dickinson 8-1 on Friday to claim the MHSAA Division 4 District 98 baseball title.

The Nordics led 1-0 before the Knights exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning at Felch.

“We weren’t striking out, we just didn’t get the big hit,” Norway coach Tony Adams said. “Credit North Dickinson for making plays. Elliott Kraemer and Landon Ross kept our energy up and we were able to break it wide open in the sixth.”

Cole Baij pitched a complete seven innings for the win, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out 10.

“Cole Baij’s pitching and (catcher) Landon Amundson’s multiple throw out of baserunners kept it at a manageable one-run deficit,” Adams said. “Proud of our kids for handling the pressure.”

This year’s district championship marks six straight for Norway and its 13th in 16 seasons.

Owen Baij tripled and singled and drove in three runs to lead the Knights’ offense against North Dickinson. Kraemer added a double and Cameron Varda laced two singles. Amundson also singled.

North Dickinson pitcher Trenton Kramer held the Knights scoreless through five innings but got just one out in the sixth. He allowed four hits and walked three. Spencer Kramer got the final two outs of the sixth inning, allowing two hits and giving up one earned run.

North Dickinson got singles against Norway from Brady Jungwirth, Luke Grunlund and Spencer Kramer. The Nordics advanced to the title game with an 8-2 win over L’Anse,

Norway won its opener 13-2 over Bark River-Harris. “We were able to keep pressure on throughout the game offensively and Owen Baij was superb on the mound,” Adams said.

Baij pitched five innings against the Broncos, allowing no hits, walking two and fanning 11. Bryce Adams finished the six-inning game, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking one.

At the plate, Owen Baij collected three hits, including a double. Amundson and Kraemer each had a double and a single while Cole Baij and Ross contributed two singles each.

Varda, Carter Cazzola and AJ Gallino also had singles.

The Knights (25-4-1) will face Jeffers at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Felch.
