The fans at Norway Speedway have been treated to some of the biggest names in Wisconsin short-track racing in the first three events of the season.
Last week marked the first stage of the Fast 5 series which concludes during the Dickinson County Fair. However, none of the names are bigger than Dalton Zehr.
Zehr was a staple at Norway Speedway for many years driving for Coleman Racing Products. Before leaving a few years ago and teaming up with John Beale out of Cambridge, Wis., Zehr returned for two reasons, one to prepare for the ASA Midwest Tour race that’s going to be held on June 21, and two to break his own Norway Speedway track record in qualifying, which he already owns at 13.951 in 2013.
Zehr missed the track record as his best lap was a 14.0, but he definitely proved he is ready for the Midwest Tour race on Friday.
The night started out with Vulcan’s Dan Lindsley winning the Fast Dash in the Coca-Cola Late Model division and Niagara’s Payton Linder winning her first Fast Dash in the Auto Value Super Stock division.

Iron Mountain’s Derek Hansen drove his Subaru WRX to a first-place finish in the Spectator Eliminators division.
The Coca-Cola Late Model 50 Lap Feature brought to you by Auto Value Parts Stores did not disappoint as Zehr drove from the rear of the field to the front taking the lead on lap 26 and never looking back.
Behind him there was some exciting racing between Zehr’s car-owner Beale, current point leader Joey Pontbriand, and Scott Stanchina. The race ended up with the two travelers finishing first and second, followed by Norway’s Pontbriand, Kingsford’s Stanchina, and Vulcan’s Lindsley. Marquette’s Parker Cain was sixth, Kingsford’s Cory Cootware was seventh, Norway’s Adam Faull eighth, Antigo’s Troy Nelson ninth, and finishing 10th was Escanaba’s Joey Stankowicz.
In the Auto Value Super Stock division, Hermansville’s Dean Bellmore won his first big check in the 35-lap feature. He was followed by Florence’s Andy Secrist, Marinette’s Lukas Peterson and Upper Pine Creek’s Ryan Wender. Rounding out the Top 5 was Linder. Fast qualifier was Wender at 15.768.
In the 141 Auto Sportsman division, Niagara’s Brian Gilhuber took first in the feature event, his first of the season. He was followed by Pembine’s Anthony Schiefelbein, Spread Eagle’s Todd Schmidt and Green Bay’s Nick Kroehler. Finishing out the Top 5 was Kingsford’s Jon Maenpaa. Kingsford’s Troy LaFave was the fast qualifier at 18.069.
In the Whelen Fab 4 division Faithorn’s Trever Cronick won his second feature of the season along with fast qualifier, 17.665. Second was Vulcan’s Cody Gunville, third was Kingsford’s Eli Whittkopf, fourth was Florence’s AshlynVanDen Heuvel, and fifth was Norway’s Adam Loomis.
In the Spectator Eliminators, Iron Mountain’s Derek Hansen won his second event this season with his Subaru WRX.
The season continues this Friday night with all four classes — Spectator Eliminators, and Stage 1 of The Power Wheels Showdown Series being brought to you by Stenberg Bros. Septic and Excavating Services and Event Rentals and The Big 10 Sports Bar and Grill. If you are interested in signing up your son or daughter for the Power Wheels event, contact the Norway Speedway Facebook page.
