GLADSTONE — Field crews in Gladstone worked diligently to get the field ready for Monday’s Little League doubleheader that saw Schaffer defeat Tri-County 5-4 and Norway defeat Kingsford 2-1 in the District 10 Majors (ages 11-12) tournament.
Norway and Schaffer were scheduled to play Tuesday in an elimination game while Iron Mountain and Gladstone squared off in the winner’s bracket. Play continues today with another elimination game and a potential championship game scheduled.
Kingsford was first on the board Monday against Norway as Will Rice tripled and scored on a throwing error in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Norway responded with a pair of runs in the third as Liam Smith scored on a bunt by Weston Bartles, who later scored on a wild pitch to give Norway the lead.
The game was in the fifth inning when Kingsford’s Andrew Olson threw his 86th pitch. Little League pitchers are limited to 85 pitches. Violation of this rule may result in the team in violation to forfeit the game.
Little League representatives were discussing the matter. Then lightning made its presence felt at Howes Field. The game was called off after five innings.
Norway pitcher Reed Anderson earned the win, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts and zero walks.
