HERMANSVILLE — District 3 of the U.P. Trappers Association is once again hosting a Kids Workshop, set for Feb. 3 in Hermansville, with lots of free things for the kids and instructional demonstrations on trapping various animals.

This popular event has been held every year for the past 19 years. A great deal of credit for this great program for introducing kids to the sport of fur harvesting goes to the Arduin brothers, Gino and Rick, of Hermansville. Rick served as president of District Three for years and he initiated the young trappers workshop idea. Brother Gino had been actively involved with the club since it was started. Both were major proponents of the notion of getting youngsters interested in this outdoor activity.

Recently the active members of District 3 decided to rename the event “The Annual Arduin Brothers Kids Trappers Workshop” in their memory.

“Both Gino and Rick were expert trappers, and great guys with the vision of keeping the trapping tradition going. They deserve a lot of credit for their active involvement in promoting this great outdoor activity. We miss them and are proud to name this event in their honor,” said Jim Fornetti, a longtime friend and member of District 3.

Those attending will see a lot of smiling and enthusiastic faces on kids and grandkids as they take in the educational demonstrations and get their prizes.

This event is open to the public and admission is free. A concession stand will be open, and there will be lots of free items offered to the kids, with each youngster guaranteed to win a door prize.

Demonstrations will be given by Jim Fornetti, weasels; Roy Dahlgren, mink and muskrats; and John Gunville, raccoons.

Barnes Hide and Fur Company will be on hand to buy fur and to offer a large variety of traps and supplies for sale — those planning to attend can also call ahead at 269-967-4475 to make sure they bring what’s needed.

Many local veteran trappers will be there to share trapping tales and offer tips and advice. Kids will be getting startup kits — younger kids a weasel trapping kit and older kids a dog-proof raccoon trap kit.

The event will be 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Central time Feb. 3 at the Community Center in Hermansville.
