IRON RIVER -- Judy Anderson of Beechwood recently donated a patriotic wall hanging to the AMVETS Post 436 of Beechwood during their fundraiser breakfast.
The piece commemorates and keeps alive the spirit of her brother, Lance Cpl. John P. Anderson, who was killed on July 2, 1967, in the vicinity of Quang Tri, Republic of South Vietnam, while serving with Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division.
Lance Cpl. Anderson entered military service on Jan. 5, 1966, and was the third young man from Iron County to die fighting in Vietnam. He was a 1965 graduate of Iron River High School. Lance Cpl. Anderson was scheduled to arrive home on furlough on July 4, 1967, and should have been in the company area for furlough processing; unfortunately, he took on one last mission and was killed.
Lance Cpl. Anderson's named is engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Virtual Wall and can be found on Panel 22E, Line 94.
Lance Cpl. Anderson is interred in Rosehill Cemetery in Beechwood.
