Norway to seek state DOT grant for Valley View Drive

By Brian Christensen 2 min read

NORWAY -- The Norway City Council will seek a state grant to cover half of the estimated $400,000 cost to resurface Valley View Drive.

If the funding is received, plans are to "crush and shape" the Valley View Drive pavement, beginning in 2020.

The Michigan Department of Transportation grant would provide Norway 50 percent of the project cost, not including engineering expenses.

"When a grant opportunity like this comes out, we have to go after it," City Manager Ray Anderson told the council Monday.

"There's no question, the road is falling apart," council member Lee Meneghini said. "It needs it."

In other business, the council:

-- Approved a $4,000 grant agreement with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to dispose of scrap tires. Details about the disposal program are expected by the end of April.

-- Allowed electric foreman Tim Brew to purchase a new equipment trailer from Ditch Witch Midwest for $11,396.

-- Authorized spending up to $4,000 on LED bulbs for the electric department as part of the LED Lighting Replacement Project. The project cost will be reimbursed through various energy-efficient programs.

-- Granted a request from Boy Scout Troop 532 to dismantle a Marion Park structure with the intent to reuse as much material as possible to restore the main cabin.

-- Approved continuing to be in the Michigan Economic Development Corporation-Redevelopment Ready Communities program. The RRC program evaluates planning, zoning and economic development practices to encourage redevelopment and new investment.
