Marilyn Jean (Orr) Steele

IRON MOUNTAIN — It is with great sadness that the family of Marilyn Steele announces her passing on July 11, 2018, in Iron Mountain.

Marilyn was born March 16, 1924, in Three Rivers, to Oscar Augustus Orr and Catherine Marie (Smith) Orr. She worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” at the Willow Run bomber plant during World War II to do her part for her country and earn money for college.

She attended Michigan State College and Grove City College, where she was a champion archer.

Marilyn worked in administration for both the FBI and Consumers Power. She married Herbert Charles Steele in 1951 and remained married for 62 years until his death in December 2015.

They raised three wonderful boys, Gordon, Michael and Robert. Marilyn and Herbert lived in Germany for 8 years and enjoyed visiting more than 150 countries. She was noted for her sense of humor, her love of cats and all animals, and her love of family.

Marilyn delighted in playing her treasured baby grand piano, loved music and ballet, reading, politics and history. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and she and Herbert were long-time members of King of Glory Lutheran Church.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her loving husband, Herbert; her sister, Virginia Orr Barbour, and her brother; Ralph Orr.

She will be deeply missed by friends, sons, wives, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15 at Sharp Funeral Home: 6063 Fenton Rd. Flint, MI, with Pastor Roger Steele officiating.
