MUNISING -- Unbeaten Munising slipped past Forest Park 53-40 in a Skyline Central Conference showdown Wednesday.
"Frustrating," said Forest Park coach Jackie Giuliani. "Things just did not go our way tonight."
The Mustangs (15-0) trailed 20-17 at halftime but gained control with an 18-9 run in the third quarter. They were tied at 25 midway through the third quarter.
The Trojans (12-3, 8-2 SCC) trailed 35-31 early in the fourth quarter until the Mustangs rolled 10-2 to the four-minute mark.
Jenna Grabowski's 16 points led the Trojans. Becky Kolenda added 10 points and Hannah Cross had 9 points and four assists.
"The girls down low played well," Giuliani said.
Forest Park made 50 percent of its field goals (16 of 32). The Trojans connected on just one of nine three-pointers, and that came late in the game from Abby Nylund.
Frankie Mattson scored 15 points to lead Munising. Marissa Immel had 14 points, four assists and seven of the Mustangs' 19 steals. Kianne Wendt added 12 points.
"It was a little ugly, but we'll take it," Munising coach Matt Mattson said. "I thought our defense was pretty good holding them to 20 in the first half, but we really struggled on offense. We missed layups and easy shots, but we turned it around.
"Frankie had a bad first half, but she pulled it together. Kianne had a good game and Marissa kept us in it when we were struggling. Marissa Ackerman also did a great job on defense."
Forest Park had 24 turnovers in the game.
"We definitely struggled (with Munising's defense)," Giuliani said. "The girls played hard to the very end. That was great Munising team. They have a lot of talented girls but we weren't afraid of them."
Class D Forest Park and Class C Munising will meet just one time this season. They had met in the past at the regional tournament.
Forest Park travels to rival West Iron County tonight.
"That will be a battle," Giuliani said.
Munising plays at North Dickinson tonight.
Giuliani said senior captain and starter Hanna Logan will be out two weeks after suffering a foot injury in last week's win over Kingsford.
Forest Park also lost the JV game 44-38.
