Norway sweeps Manistique to clinch share of MPC title

NORWAY -- Norway swept Manistique and gained a share of the Mid-Peninsula Conference regular season softball championship Wednesday at Marion Park.

The Knights defeated the Emeralds 14-0 to complete a game postponed from last week. They joined Westwood at the top of the standings by beating Manistique 14-3 in the second game.

"I'm proud of the girls," said Norway Coach Bob (Kuba) Bal.

Norway (25-12, 10-2) lost two regular season games to Westwood. The Patriots, who won the MPC tourney title Saturday, fell to Ishpeming and Negaunee for their league losses.

The opener Wednesday lasted one inning as the Knights padded an 11-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a mercy win.

Knights pitcher Alli Sheski wrapped up a one-hitter with six strikeouts and three walks.

Sheski homered, singled and knocked in three runs. Ada VanHolla (triple), Cassidy Menard (double) and Britt Grayvold each added two hits.

In the nightcap, Norway pitcher Mariah Gyselinck allowed five hits, struck out two and walked six.

Laney Lorenzoni and Riley Hendricks had two of the Norway hits.
