Pickleball

IRON MOUNTAIN -- Pickleball has gained a foothold in Iron River, Crystal Falls and Norway.

Iron Mountain and Kingsford, with a big assist from Community Schools, appears committed to also playing the game.

A pickleball organizational meeting was held this week at East Elementary School.

"We're extremely excited about adding pickleball to our adult recreation program," said Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools Director Julie Wonders.

Pickleball meshes the qualities of tennis, badminton and ping pong. As in those sports, there's a racquet or paddle, ball and net involved. The game, primarily doubles, can be played outdoors or indoors.

"We fell in love with the game," said Bill Stephenson, one of the organizers.

Bill and his wife, Vickie, picked up the game in Green Valley, Ariz. They cited the social and health benefits.

"Pickleball is for everybody," said Vicki Stephenson, noting an athletic background isn't a requirement.

About 15 people, including a pickleball trophy-winner from Florida and the father of a Wisconsin tournament standout, appeared for the organizational meeting.

The next step is learning how to play. Anybody interested can stop by the Iron Mountain Central School gym at 9 a.m. Tuesday to play or watch. The pickleball group will also assemble at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Community Schools will provide the rackets, balls and nets until school is in session. There's no cost for participants.

"Instruction will be available for all beginners," Vickie Stephenson said. "For anyone interested in learning about pickleball, there is a wealth of videos on YouTube for all levels of play."
