Wykons overcome Esky
IRON RIVER — West Iron County, powered by a doubles sweep, spilled Escanaba 6-2 in girls tennis Wednesday at Nelson Field Courts.
The Eskymos took No. 1 and 2 singles with Taylor Gauthier and Megan Marenger, respectively. The Wykons captured the other two singles matches with Izzy Hoogenboom and Anna Malmquist.
Gauthier downed Kat Serbentas 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
“I credit Taylor Gauthier for playing a nice match,” WIC Coach Joe Serbentas said. “Kat hit a lot of nice strokes.
“Izzy and Anna have been playing long points and improving their consistency.”
The first two doubles matches went three sets. Natalie Tomasoski-Eden Golliher and Emily Nelson-Tori Bociek notched the WIC wins.
“I like the resiliency of my doubles teams,” Serbentas said. “They pulled out some victories. They could be building blocks for later in the year.”
The Wykons compete today in the Westwood Invitational.
