Golden K hosts special Valentine’s party

A display of valentines made by the special needs children for the annual Golden K Valentine’s party.

IRON MOUNTAIN — The fellowship hall at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford was buzzing with activity on Monday morning. Golden Kers were everywhere — setting up tables, decorating and preparing treats for the special needs students coming for the annul Valentine’s Party.

Don Pedo and Mary Jane Nelson were planning their strategy on how to judge the valentine creations.

Each school has their students create valentines with a special theme in mind. These special needs people amaze the Golden Kers every year with their innovative ideas and designs. Viewing these creations is as special as going to any art show or museum. They never fail to bring oohs and awes with their artistic ability and imagination. When all the valentines are put on display, the “judges” look over each one and make their choices. Valentines are arranged in groups of five and three are chosen from each group. Then, from the groups of three, one is chosen and a prize is awarded.

While the judges are busy in one corner, Bobbie Jo Riske was busy in another corner setting up her music. Entertaining young and old alike with “The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round” and throwing in a polka in her repertoire had everyone singing, dancing and clapping to the music. Orice Walters served as party emcee. Then out came the treats with Golden Kers serving and visiting with the children.

Thank yous go to the teachers, aides and bus drivers for their help getting these terrific young people to the church. Thanks to these schools for allowing the students to share a few hours with the seniors: Woodland, Woodland ISD, Willis Center, Norway, Florence and Florence High School, Niagara, Kingsford Middle School and Forest Park in Crystal Falls. Golden K members hope the day was as special for them as it is for the seniors.

Bobbi Jo Riske, left, provided youthful songs with karaoke for the party. At right, Golden K member Orice Walters introduces Riske.

The Golden Throats will sing the Wednesday at Freeman Nursing Home in Kingsford.

Golden K will meet Monday, with John Aune speaking on the Kremlin Mine in Pembine, Wis. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

Mary Jane Nelson announces the winners of the valentines made by the special needs children for the annual party hosted by the Golden K.

Guests enjoy entertainment and lunch.
