Analog versus digital ‘mystery’ program

Golden K chairwoman for April Orice Walters introduces member Gary Proudfit as the guest speaker at Monday’s meeting. Proudfit addressed the group and discussed analog versus digital.

KINGSFORD — Spring has finally arrived with the spring peepers singing their evening serenade. The small chorus frog, named after their chirping call, marks the beginning of spring. I hope their songs were not in vain. Golden K members were not deterred by the cooler temperature on Monday morning. They gathered for coffee and donuts, thanks to Ben Determan, who arrived early to set up.

April’s chairwoman Orice Walters opened the meeting. Bill Roberts led the group, accompanied by Alyce Derwinski on the piano, as they sang “Dear Hearts and Gentle People,” as well as, other golden oldies. Bill informed the group of the recent passing of two Golden K members, Sam Chartier and George Pera. In their memory, the Golden K sang “Auld Lang Syne.”

Walters informed members of the scholarship committee that was appointed consisting of members Ben Determan, Sharon Scholke and Gilbert Engel. Engel will again organize the Adopt-a-Highway clean-up effort that will take place on May 23. Interested members should contact him.

Thoughts for the day were read by Walters; “Mondays are a good day to focus on what we get to do instead of what we have to do. Life is a blessing not an obligation,” and “Friends are the chocolate chips in the cookies of life.” Everyone agreed with these sentiments.

Leon Gospodarek collected the winnings from the 50-50 drawing. Gary Proudfit read the Happy Dollar messages from members who were thankful for the beautiful weekend weather and for one who is happy to be heading to Kalamazoo for her son’s college graduation.

Members were reminded of the Gus Macker launch party that took place Tuesday with proceeds going to the Imagination Factory.

Chairman for the month of May will be Vance Uhazie.

The mystery guest was no stranger to the Golden K. Walters introduced Gary Proudfit, who talked to the group about analog versus digital and the changes in electronics.

Proudfit first wished to thank Dorleen and Vance Uhazie for introducing him and his wife, Sue, to the Golden K. He further thanked Joe Santi for his recent program which included socializing in neighborhoods in years gone by.

Proudfit explained the differences between analog and digital by providing props such as an 8mm film, VHS tape and DVD. He provided other items as well to show the advancement in electronic communication.

When Proudfit served in the U.S. Navy, he was a radarman scope dope. He showed a map of the continents and advised that each continent had an antenna with a different frequency to aid in his position. Triangulation determines location by using triangles to determine location using the antennas. He advised that this method was quite accurate.

Walters presented Proudfit with a thank you card that was prepared by DICSA. Kathy Arnold, RSVP Director of DICSA, also attended the meeting.

Golden K meets at 10 a.m. every Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. All are welcome. This week program will feature Pauline Hill.

Starting at $4.00/week.
