Audiologist speaks at Golden K meeting

Chairman Ben Determan introduces Golden K guest speaker Laurie LaFleur, a certified audiologist.

KINGSFORD — The senior gathering Monday morning began a little differently. Margie and Ron Yadro from the Dickinson County Community Chorus added their voices to the singing. In anticipation of the Golden Throats once again being able to entertain at various local nursing facilities, an extra practice session took place.

Alyce Derwinski on piano had compiled a list of songs for the group. The Yadros led the rekindled Golden Throat singers through practice of oldies. Under the musical direction of this terrific duo, the group of about 15 Golden Kers began with “America the Beautiful” and surprised themselves.

After a two-year break, this group sounded as though they were more than ready to once again bring song to the residents at local nursing facilities. Among the medley of songs, “Oh What A Beautiful Morning” fit perfectly into the day as it was just that — a beautiful morning.

Although there were no birthdays or anniversaries to sing about, two guests were welcomed with song — Anna Vincent and guest speaker Laurie LaFleur, an ASHA-certified audiologist from Florence, Wis.

Ben Determan shared his Happy Dollars with kudos to the Golden Throats calling them “A group of good people doing a nice thing for others.” A little more practice and the Golden Throats can once again begin their visits to nursing homes. Times and dates are still being coordinating with these facilities.

October chairman Determan introduced guest speaker LaFleur. She has many years of education and experience and has advanced certification in audiology and speech/language pathology. LaFleur specializes in audiological services, hearing aids and service, and speech and language services. She covered a wealth of information in a brief period of time, including that 44 million people in the U.S. are hearing impaired.

The first step to better hearing is an appointment with a hearing care professional. They will determine the type of loss you have, and help you find the right hearing aid for your needs and lifestyle. Hearing aid treatment is as individual as you are.

There are new developments in prescription hearing aids, and over the counter have recently become available. Over-the-counter devices are purchased without a professional hearing evaluation, and do not include fitting or support. With over the counter, no evaluation is required and one-size-fits-most is the routine.

In comparison, prescription hearing aids are for all ages and include professional evaluation, set up, and adjustment. Advanced options are offered and the return policy is regulated by the state. Professional, prescription aids are programmed for the precise individual hearing loss profile. Follow-up care and instructions are provided by a professional. If you notice a change in your hearing, LaFleur recommends that you check with your insurance provider and be sure you understand what they will cover.

People who hear better tend to feel better physically and emotionally. They are more likely to stay socially active. Hearing aid technology has improved and the results are better than ever. They are more comfortable, have options for size and type, including wireless options that stream audio from your phone, TV and other electronics. Are you having trouble understanding conversations and people sound like they are mumbling?

Do you ask people to repeat themselves, or have a hard time hearing in a group setting? Do ringing, buzzing or other noises annoy you? Your best option to better hearing is visiting a professional who will determine the cause and extent of your hearing loss. Sometimes it is an easy fix, like wax build-up. Making a decision and following through with a professional evaluation will assure you will not miss one one word of that grandchild who comes running up, arms wide open, saying “I love you.”

The Golden K meets Monday mornings at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. The general meeting begins at 10 a.m., with program scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Dylan Bolander will be the guest speaker at the next meeting.

Get up early and join us — everyone is welcome. Golden K members and anyone interested in singing can meet at 9:30 a.m. for practice.
